Tbh everybody who races would want suspension and brakes upgraded along with decent tyres. This would also mean that CSL/M3 could both run as only difference worth talking about would be a CF roof.

Nice idea to have mix of 40 and 20 minute races.

Sorry - I didn't explain the suspension bit enough. The only standard part is the top mounts and the wishbones. You can replace any bush with a nylon one anywhere on the car (except for the top mount), but no solid mounts. The idea of this is to make the generic £2000 suspension system as effective as a £5000 system - since there is a certain amount of "movement" in all these parts - if everything was solid mounted then a £5000 system would out perform the £2000 system and hence the guy who spends most money wins - not the ethos of this idea, and Thorney has already proved that this does not work. Dampers and springs are free and will probably be 2 or 3 way adjustable, so there is loads of scope for getting the set-up tuned. Definately be a control tyre, a treaded one which would hopefully be road legal for those who wish to keep their cars road legal and even possibly drive to the races (just depends on if it is in a fit state to drive home!!) Maybe the chance of doing some 2, 4 and 6 hour races? Just depends on costs and demand.

The main aim for this - and it was only a chat over a beer at a race meeting recently, was to give a platform for the E46 to race at sensible money. Just take a look at all the E46's out there with trick gearboxes costing thousands, massive engine upgrades, diffs, slicks, wets, aero, mega expensive suspension, pedal boxes, plastic windows, carbon fibre parts, stand alone ecu ignition systems which need a lot of dyno time to get them right etc etc etc......and in the end, people have run out of money and then can't afford to race the damn thing - so whats the point? The chap who is considering starting this series has no interest in trying to make money from this, people can buy their parts from where ever they want, so long as they are to the regulations. I'm already trawling ebay for an early M3, £5000 will definately buy a complete working car in the near future. Cage, seat, suspension, bushes, harness, wheels and tryes and away you go!

This would be a fair level playing field where the driver with the best skill and set-up knowledge will succeed. I hope this happens.

So which would appeal to the road/trackday guys who dont want to buy an extra set of wheels, keep the car on standard wheels (get a set on ebay for £100) as regards suspension you need top mounts, KW and Billstein do a none adjustable set for approx £1000, only upgrade the front brakes KSport do a set for approx£1000. Standard rear brakes are okay with upgraded pads, usual thing like bushes upgraded, weights 1400 kgs fuelled up and if you want to run adjustable front suspension and ap's front and rear the car has to weigh 1450 kgs, so here you go, things can be run on a budget all the above is really to get guys who are doing trackdays and still race in a road legal car, two races a day both 30mins one or two drivers to keep the cost down

    Here a list of entrants

Something for people to think about though - I was chatting with a guy I know through racing that he was thinking about running a race series for the E46 M3. Ethos is to make it fair and affordable. A one make series, no csl allowed, standard engine, gearbox, diff (apart from cooling), standard suspension top mounts (basically means that you can be competitive with a £2000 suspension system and if you spend £5000 on suspension it will be no real benefit), exhaust manifold must be standard, the remainder is allowed to be modified. ecu will be locked out with a specified map supplied by the race organiser and then sealed. 18 inch wheels only, you can use the same width front and back to extend tyre life by interchanging front with rears - saves money again. The one thing that needs to be tested is brakes, big brakes will be pricey. If, and it is a big if that I asked about - if the brakes can be proved to work with braided hoses, standard calipers with uprated fluid and race pads, then it should be a very cost effective way to race a fantastic car. In short, you can buy a car now for £5000, yes, it may be a cat d or an old tatty one, but who cares it's going to be raced. Another £5000 should make it race ready, so you get to the grid for £10,000 in a 343 bhp, rear wheel drive, one make series where everyone effectively has the same car.

Obviously these are rough figures, but achievable - seems like a bargain to me, I'm in if it goes ahead!!

    Anyone else fancy it?

Disagree about allowing more mods though, cost spiral and the man with the deepest pockets wins. I'll happily race wheel barrows........as long we all have the same wheel barrow. If drivers want to modify as they go on, this not for them.

I think you could run it on the TrAckday Trophy/Team Trophy series to start with MSV. Allow more mods than suggested such as suspension, brakes, no aero, as any serious driver will want the car to handle better and tyres to wear slowly (maybe control tyres to take re budget and heavy exlenditure out). 40 minute races and take away the sprint, two drivers to remove some of the damage and testosterone (keeping costs down)

In this climate you'd be lucky to get 10-12 cars of this type but if by chance it looked like good racing it may take off. Other series don't like E46M3 as they are too quick.
