AP rear pads/discs choices - ?

They're not really suitable for heavy cars and so overheat in hard use. What this does is then leave deposits of brake pad material on the disc surface (visible as black smudges), which then causes disc run-out issues (brake judder). The material can be removed from the discs if caught early enough and no damage is experienced, but if left it can eventually lead to the discs warping due to the fact that the discs do not heat up evenly (the material embedded on the disc preventing disc to pad contact).

What is wrong with the DS2500 pads that everyone seems to swap them out for something else?

Cheers fellas,
I also thought 3mm wear sounded too much. I'll just get new ones and be done with it. Are the RS29s not a bit squealy for everyday use (thought I read that on here somewhere....)

'sailorbaz has just bought an AP BBK and sold the DS2500 pads that came with the kit, in preference for a set of RS29's, they're good all round pads for both road and track.
As regards the set on PH skimmed discs, my 1st question why have them skimmed? You can get deposits off without the need for skimming. One looks as though it's had a whack as the outer edge is deformed, it also says that they are newly painted, if they are less than 3 years old why?
Nothing keeps you safer than brakes, personally I would go for new or off a fellow member of the register, that way you know they're right.

Minimum thickness of oem front discs is 26.4mmOriginally posted by JBird View PostHi,
Also looking into a set of APs. Does anybody know the min thickness for front OEM discs? New is 28mm. There is a bloke on PH selling set of AP front calipers , with OEM discs skimmed to 25mm. Wondering if there is really much life left in these???
if buying a completly new AP kit, and planning on running RS29s for track, (maybe keeping the DS2500 for road) are the front discs that come in the AP BBK considered any good, or do I need to expect to shell out for PF discs a short time later?
cheers!

I agree, AP discs are good if you don't use ds2500 on track.
I think wear is 2mm so 3mm skim sounds like pants. (I may be wrong)

3mm taken from a 28mm disc sounds too much IMOOriginally posted by JBird View PostHi,

AP discs are fine in the proper kit, you should get a few sets of pads out of them

Gareth will know. Personally I would run Rear OEM discs with RS29 as Im sure the AP rear discs do not have any advantage over OEM just look nicer.

I don't have AP's on my M3 but I imagine the corrosion is galvanic reaction caused by dissimilar metals with the caliper being aluminium and the pins being steel??Originally posted by Pip1968Following someone's post regarding the pins seizing in their caliper I checked my pins. Actually, as she has been holed up in the garage for the last few months I decided to put the rears into Lepsons for a refurbish - £100 a pop each!!. Anyway the pins were fine with a little corrosion around the calpier's recess of the 6mm hex bolt in the form of white powedery residue.
I use this stuff on my Elise (and anything else that has 2 dissimalar metal touching each other) anywhere I have anything bolting to the aluminium chassis. http://www.eliseparts.com/products/show/60/408/duralac/ it seems to have stopped my chassis from going all white and powdery and its cheap. Lasts ages to...I'm still on my first tin.

Apology accepted,as you can now see I was answering Jim's post and not yours.Originally posted by Pip1968 View PostStop skim reading my rambling and boring posts..... I am refering to rear discs not fronts.
I assume that you have either made a typo Bounce or you are talking about fronts at 28mm when new. Thank you for further reassurance CraigMillwardCroft (is that triple barrel super posh/rich - ?).
Are most of those with APs on the rear running with RS29s then. I assume standard OEM pads on the rear will be fine too.
Pip :-D
Apologies Bounce I am trying to multi task and have skim read myself - rear 20mm front 28mm when new - noted :notworthy:
