Designed and machined specifically for the E46 M3 SMG, this gear knob is Storm Motorwerk's latest effort to bring some class to your interior.
With the E46 M3 representing one of Bavaria's finest machines, the chrome plastic SMG shift knob just seemed out of place - so Storm Motorwerks designed their own! Retaining the same overall dimensions of the OEM SMG gear knob, this design has a very simple yet elegant profile with some detailing grooves to enhance its subtle curvature while retaining a characteristic of the original. Machined from stainless steel and finished off with the SMG shift pattern engraving, the V3 SMG is an upgrade to the OEM effort in every way.
The SMG Ring was put onto Storm's drawing board by fellow M3 owners wanting a matching item to their SMG Gear knobs. The brief was clear - design a piece to look subtle, fit well and have an automotive performance feel to it. After a few design iterations and input from many E46 M3 owners they arrived at the design you now see. It features a tapered top face which drops into a curve - this combination of geometries makes the ambient light reflect in a way such as to accentuate the overall design. In addition they incorporated seven machined dimples to give it an OEM feel as the original has the same number of set screws around its perimeter. Coupled with Storm Motorwerk's Billet SMG V3 Gear Knob, the improvement to the E46 SMG interior is clear to see.
With the aesthetics finalized, Storm then focused on the fitment. The panel on which the ring sits has a curvature to it so the ring could not simply have a flat base. They mapped the profile of the panel and incorporated it on to the base. Machining a curvature into the base proved to be the biggest challenge during development but one which we have overcome to produce a piece of machine work which fits superbly onto the SMG panel.
Installation is simple - the base panel simply unclips allowing the OEM ring and gaiter to be unclipped. The Billet SMG Ring is then put into position and the leather gaiter clipped back in!
