    Carbon Roof repair

    Hi Guys,

Washed the motor this weekend and noticed I have a chip in the laquer, no damage to the carbon luckily, but its gone white around the edges of the chip.

Does anyone know or recommend someone to repair this kind of issue? I asked Sytner when I went down this weekend and they said some laquer can be placed over it. But I don't want it looking sh|ty.

    Cheers
    Thomas

Pinch some clear nail varnish off your Mrs or boyfriend, just until you get it sorted, dont let water get in it.

I have the same issue. :banghead:

I picked up a couple of chips on a Silverstone track day late last year and haven't bothered my arse to sort it yet. I simply placed some black electrical tape over them to stop water ingress - i hope it isn't worse when i peel it off!

Here's the only link i could find on here but it doesn't offer much help:

Looking for some advice, I picked up a couple of stone chips on my CF roof last year. I always intended getting them looked at but never quite got around to it. Anyway ofer the winter with the ice andsnow and cold temps it would the transparent top coat arond the chip has begun to disbond and i now hace an area of around 1cm

You just have to get a BMW paint kit and use the lacquer bottle.
A single drop will do the trick for you.
I had the same issue 1.5 year ago, I put a drop of lacquer and no problem with the carbon roof.
Also, it's quite difficult to spot as it is transparent.

            Another here:

Alright lads. No been on here in too long - no idea how Im gonna catch up on all the posts! Hope everyones well and still enjoying their motors. Iv been too busy to drive, so only done 1000 miles since may 09 :banghead: Anyway, Ive a little issue with my roof... Seems to be a problem with the laquer. It feels a little rough

Any good bodyshop will be able to sort it if dont fancy tackling it yourself. Sounds like you have a little water laying in there. They'll be able to rub it back, re-lacquer and polish it all back to its original state.

I will get a photo from my 'fix' tomorrow.
I remember you have a polishing machine -> if you let the lacquer dry properly, you could polish the roof and make the 'fix' completely transparent.

Cool - i just wish the air temperatures would rise quicker to aid the curing in my cold garage!

                    Cheers guys

The guy at Sytner just said he will fill it up with Laquer, he didn't mention any rubbing down and polishing!

Might take it to my local bodyshop and ask if they can sort it.

What about the points raised in the refurbishment of the CF splitters in this thread:-

                      https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/c...litters-refurb

Karbon Kid "I did the prep work and I dropped them off to the bodyshop who are re-spraying the bumper.

They use a two part Lacquer which has a hardener in and this will give the best results, finishing with oven treatment. Like I did last time.

You cannot obtain a good and durable finish with any type of DIY aerosol, it gets applied too thin and does not last."

Does the laquer not need baking?

I am sure there are other ways of getting the laquer to the right temperature without puting it in the oven but hey ho. My main point is is this a fix if it has not been baked.

Well guys, got the car back yesterday and wanted to update you on the Roof repair.

BMW are quite funny with repairing the roof, as it can cause a loss of strength in the material over time. However Peter at Sytner showed me the email direct from BMW with the methods of repairing which unfortunately I don't have a copy, however I have asked him to email it to me so I will scan it and get it posted. They have a strict approach to repairing them put it that way.

However, when I collected her Peter took me over to the car and showed me what they did and all I can say is WOW, the mark on the roof was gone, he advised me that they layered it with laquer a few times and then polished out also let it bake for a while (Caused a little bubbling on the black strips on each side of the roof, obviously to hot for the material to handle).

Also the car went in for a full bonnet and wings spray and it looks stunning now. Well should be for £1100, all with a BMW Guarentee aswell.

Very Happy, will post some pictures up this weekend if the weather is decent. She's in the garage now to chill out for a bit
