Metzler engine, Metzler engine, Metzler engine, Metzler engine.

Until EVO started mentioning this I think 98% of average petrol heads never even realised that the engines in the Turbos / RS' were different to the regular Carreras. Now it's regurgitated on Pistonheads ad nauseum by every Tom, Dick, and Harry like they know what it means.

I'd get the newest you can afford. And I'd go for PDK. The Turbo is so fast you'll want to keep both hands on the wheel.

It is Mezger, as in Hans Mezger.

My bad. I copy / pasted from the original post. Bad spelling and all.

        Sorry Hans!

That is the problem. A PDK Hans engine does not exist. Gen 2 got PDK, but also a new engine. The Tip I am told is crap!

I still don't see the problem. What's 'wrong' with the new engine?

I'd try and stretch to a 991 Carrera 2 with PDK, it is actually faster than a 997 GT3 RS around the 'ring (but you all know that is my thing ) !

997 gt3 with comfort pack ... safer place to put his cash than a newer car and will be great fun

otherwise, tempt him into the world of aircooled .. ultimately not as quick but a lot more enjoyable and satisfying to drive

Oh yes, 993 for me. My C2 has the engine out right now for a big chunk of TLC.

Went to see a 997 GTS 4 PDK today. Was very impressed. Drove beautifully and more refined than we expected. As a daily it would work. Question is what would it be worth in 5 years with another 25k on it... If it's value will plummet it's a pointless buy, if not mighty tempted

By the way 997 turbo gen 1s are selling quickly. Rang to see two both just sold!

The 991 GTS is almost £100k new, that will probably drop to £65k in 3 years, following a normal depreciation curve, and that could well be the last na GTS.

If you lose £5k a year, that's an acceptable cost of motoring (was that way with CSL's too)

Buy a turbo or GTS accepting that you'll lose money, but have a great car. I'm thinking about this.

If not, buy into the GT dream, enjoy the car but also know that they could climb or could be due a significant market correction. When / if, who knows but accept it either way.

Remember it's rare for a car not to depreciate and the value of your investment can rise or fall. Opinions are like arseholes...everyone has one.

Either way, enjoyment of car should be first priority.

I am driving a 991 GTS at present (on loan) - I would not buy one at £100k, and prefer to buy a 997 2GTS (with LSD) at between £50k to £60k - or a LHD 997.2 GT3 at circa £80k.

The 4GTS has the LSD as standard. As Yanto says, cars are for enjoyment 1st & foremost.

                              Thanks for advice folks.

Here is the logic. He bought a jag xf nearly new which has been great but understandably depreciated heavily. He accepts this

However with retirement pending His mileage will drop and he doesn't fancy dropping £30-£40k into a heavily depreciating motor.

So I had a brainwave! Buy a porsche as a daily that will depreciate less than a Jag or BM. Lower depreciation will offset higher running costs and I get to use it too!

Always a risk which we accept, but we want to target one of the least likely to depreciate cars available, and will enjoy it and live with the consequences!

                              Man logic at it's best
