Info here may help...I was thinking the same before I had mine checked to try and save on labour. But mine had no cracks in the end.

Hello all, Just wondering what other parts to consider replacing while the rear axel is off the car, and hopefully save on some labour. I'm currently looking at becoming part of the club (if you will have me of course haha :notworthy:), and soon to seal the deal on one CSL I've had my eye on for a while. Just getting

    In summary, these appear to be the main bits to look at;

    - RTAB
    - Diff seals and carrier bushes
    - Rear brake lines

And you could look at fitting the Turner limiter kit. Turns out there was already one on mine :supz:

+1. My CSL is a December build, but I have until the reg date in Feb until goodwill expires. You would imagine it would be the other way round, but by no means going to question it

Also, when I got my standard M repaired last year, they just seemed interested in the age and if the car was (heavily) modified. Quite keen to look after me...for which I'm sure they are well compensated for.

Having a warranty may indirectly help you score some brownie points with the bloke who signs off the goodwil claim if you fall short in one of the above categories. That's how it was explained to me.

As an aside, I guess the question of using the warranty to get the floor fixed will be asked often now that goodwill is coming to an end. Looking in the policy book, the all bells and whistles warranty is still just called "comprehensive component cover". Vehicle "body" or "chassis" are not mentioned. I think you'd struggle to argue that the floor is a component.
I BELEIVE it is 10 years from registration of the car....service and mileage aren't mentioned (by BMW)

          cheers mate

I'll speak with Elms and ask them to double-check these bits. It's not the Elms our Emma & Gareth are at, it's Bedford (Elms bodyshop) so does anyone know of a good contact at Bedford to speak to?

          thanks

Simon Fish is the contact you want at Elms Bedford Body Shop. Absolutely top bloke just like Gareth.

Thanks gents this confirms what I thought. Should the inspection be free? They are trying to charge £29 as part of a health check.

I had my inspection and repair done FOC, apart from the etra few bits I had done. Also, I thought BMW's health checks were free. Never charged me for these in the past?

You'll get all this from Sytner Nottingham. I don't take my car there any more (only took it once) and take it to Elms instead. World of difference.

I don't know mate, but would be interested to find out. As a side comment, my feeling is that they tend to crack earlier in the UK (7-9th year) compared to Germany (many not yet cracked), probably due to the poorer roads in the UK. I'd put our roads back home halfwhere between the UK and Germany in terms of quality (thats probaby being kind!). I'd have thought they'd be some cracked ones in Oz by now.

I completely agree I used Elms for my inspection 2 however my car is in nottingham (and Im in Africa :banghead its proving a costly exercise to get it to Cambridge and back. Especially since its not taxed. Nottingham it is. Ive emailed them back ill see what response I get. Failing that ill just get the oil service done and tell them to forget anything else.

If Nottingham does'nt find any cracks or they try charging you, give me a text. Bring it down mine I'll get it on a ramp and find a crack. I'd be very surprised if yours has'nt cracked yet  If the technician at bm has'nt found/diagonised cracks before, he'll struggle to find them and 'could' give you car the all clear.

This is a kind offer as I wouldn't trust a non-proven 'crack-finder' dealer to spot anything. A friend had his M3 up on his ramp, found small cracks using the Gareth method, so he took it to a BMW dealer in London, who inspected and advised it was all fine.

So on to the next garage...

Just heard from a mate today who had his M3 on his ramp, spotted no cracks, took it to Gareth for peace of mind who found one and has kicked off the goodwill process.

                                Gareth is the crackmeister :notworthy:

                                ---

I am convinced that there are lots of M3's driving round the "smooth roads of Europe" with subrame cracks that people are either oblivious of (driver) or denying (BMW).
