Selling a car to someone abroad - what to watch out for

    Hi Guys,

I've got a guy interested in my CSL that lives in Germany. He is talking about booking a flight today to come over tomorrow and pick the car up.

At first he offered cash I Euro's which I wasn't happy with, so he is going to get it changed up into pounds sterling.

I asked him to ring me, as this usually sorts out the scammers from the people genuinely interested and sure enough he did. He haggled and haggled about the price, which again, scammers don't bother doing, so I'm pretty sure he sounds genuine.

I just want to be sensible about this, as there is scope for some problems here I think - or maybe that's just me being paranoid about being scammed.

I was thinking that when he comes over, I'll go with him to my bank and pay the money in before giving him the keys and letting him drive off. Is this enough of a precautionary measure, or is there any chance of the bank not spotting dodgy notes straight away? and where would i stand if I paid the money in and at a later date the bank found the notes to be fake? Would it be their fault for not spotting it at the point of paying it in, or would I be liable to loose it all?

I should think it will be fine, but I just like to think these things through (maybe a little too much). Also it was hard enough to get that sort of money out when I bought the car in the first place, so the fact he can get it changed up on a Monday morning is what got me doubting it...

Anyway, any advice appreciated, even if it is telling me to man up and stop worrying :hahaha:

    He sounds A1.

Get him to bring his passport and DLicence, and photocopy them.

Ask the bank to check the notes if you are suspicious.

Do what you need to make it ok, no rush.

The boys that bought Bealos car seemed absolutely dodgy as fook on the phone and text. They want to come over and pay online and immediately trailer away the car. Spelling weeks, no negotiation.

When they turned up they were Welsh , and rally nuts. SOLD

Cheers Shimmy, good point about the photocopying of the passport and DL, I was going to ask the bank to do this when I took the money in.

Like you say the main thing is not to rush it!

Guys that bought Bealo's car sound nuts :hahaha:

I'll report back and let you know how I get on!

They were, couldn't understand a word they were saying even when they spoke English, which wasn't often.....but they were genuine and good buyers.

I sold my 22b to a guy from the south of France.
He flew over with signed document from his bank manager, we went to my bank and my manager checked and signed his bit.
One scan and email and the transfer process was started (cant be stopped after that point)
However being Scottish and tight I still made the guy stay 2 days though until the money showed up in my account :bigcry: :bigcry:

I forget what the process was called but my bank have seen it before and were happy with it.

            - german people always pay cash and come back home with the car.
            - french people never has cash, always pay with chèque or bank transfer but even seeing the money on your account, you don't have the guaranty to really have the money untill about 1 week.
            - african people always pay with western union and want you to send the car with a courrier

i will definitly sell the car to african people :blalalala:

The bank will spot dodgy notes when counting them. The bloke that bought my old m3 paid cash and wanted to drive the car away before going to the bank.

I said Id accept cash but you have to come to the bank with me, and if on a Sat make sure its early and the bank is open, I called the bank in advance and told them I was coming in.

As another blag is to say Ill collect at midday Sat, they get held up till 3-4pm, pay you cash or dodgy bankers draft, no banks open till Monday am.

Anyone genuine will come to the bank with you.

James, I hope it's not our fan loving German " Dennis the Clocker " getting his sticky mitts (once again) on a higher then average mileage UK RHD CSL, making it disappear somewhere in Germany for a while only to reappear 12 months later on eBay, with half of the original miles

                  Hi Guys,

thanks for the advice, glad to say the transaction went fine and it didn't go to dennis the clocker, although i fear that it will get clocked at some point in its life over there

                  Thanks,
                  James

Commiseration's mate that must have been tough letting it go. Lets hope it's looked after and not messed about with
Let Shimmy have the details of your car for his "Special" files (with today's mileage, etc) and lets see

Cheers guys, it wasn't easy letting it go, but I'm sure once I'm in a house with a nice tiled and heated garage looking for my next CSL it'll all have been worth it!

Shimmy - i'll drop you a PM for your spreadsheet
