    You have to inform DVLA.

Tell your mate he has to inform them

      Thanks...my mate says thanks:whistle:

Where would he find the new engine number if he was to look under the bonnet?

Edit to add, there is also a section on the blue iirc part of the V5 that you can fill in with new engine number, send V5 with relevent completed section in to DVLA and they sort it.

I would attach a copy of warranty invoice with evidence of engine change so as to avoid any complications.

The engine no is stamped on the block, or you, sorry your mate could just speak to murketts et al, and ask for the relevent paperwork with said number on.

                No.

If it was so paramount then the BMW garage would be under obligation to either A, make you aware of it ,or B, inform DVLA themselves.

Just play dumb, you are a natural at it:hahaha::hahaha::hahaha:

Joking aside I dont think there would be an issue, unless a buyer gets behind the engine to check on block, but you will have paperwork and will no doubt sell the car with a major bonus of having a new engine in, so the prospective buyer would know anyway.
