    M3 CSL Engine Fail

    M3 CSL Engine Fail

I am asked why did my CSL get a new engine?

    This is why,
There was a rattle from the top of the engine that sounded like the shims were needing done.

Booked the CSL in to BMW for the big service Inc shims, Car was worked on the following day so the car was cold all the shims were measured and new shims put in so it was in spec

    Rocker cover removed

    Vanos unit removed

When the tec started the car to move it off the ramp it sounded like he had missed some
(Strange he thought) Still the next day strip the car back down to find a few out of spec
He was sure he had not missed them so after further investigation the cams were removed
And the cam followers were like flat not curved like they should be Never seen this before he said.

    Cam removed

The follower is the part on top of the spring it is pushed down with the cam to
    open the valves

When I seen this I thought it must be oil starvation.
I wanted the head removed for further investigation at my cost if there was nothing more found.

    This was the head removed

This was the bores with the head removed

There was marks in the bores BMW UK wanted the pistons removed and the bores measured with the piston rings ( It was still in spec )
New Piston rings were ordered and Re measured after the bores were honed
it looked like there was grove in the bore where the piston goes from tdc
    back down

Picture of the marks on the bore

Pistons out the bores the bigend shells look great
    Block witout pistons

Next the bores honed you can see the marks on the bore but still in spec with the new rings

BMW were looking at rebuilding this engine but i was not happy and after speaking to my service manager and him speaking to BMW it was agreed
the cost would be more to rebuild the unit and a new Engine was ordered

The new Engine in its delivery crate

    Engine in the car

It looked like oil starvation but not sure as the big ends were like new but at the end of the day it was a good outcome since this there have been a few CSLs needing Cams but is it just cams or is it followers as well
he has also done a Z4M with the same problem so its not just the CSL

Sucks you had to go through all of that Mark but glad you got the new motor. How much mileage did the old engine have?
