    roof issue

I have an issue with the CSL roof.
Last weekend I put a square of masking tape on, some tin foil and the GPS antenna for the vbox. Taped it all down with black duct tape exactly as I have done for the last 5 yrs.

Now I removed it on Monday and to my horror it looks to have damaged the roof.
Now this is the weird bit, its under the lacquer, the roof is perfect to the touch but looks "millky" where the tape has been.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

I'm guessing its a re lacquer or replacement roof (if anybody has one they want to sell)

    What do you think ?

Not seen this, but does sound like the lacquer. Can you take a pic ?
I had something similar on my exhuast surround, resolved by sanding down and spray-lacquering. On the roof I'd get a pro to do it.

Painthshielding it as protection is also worth considering, expecially with the roof being NLA.

Doesn't look like it needs a new roof to me, looks like it's pulled the surface layer off with it, or reacted, one for Mark to comment on really.

I highly doubt that's pulled the carbon from the clear.

Have you tried a detailing guy first?

Almost seems to me like something from the tape or foil has reacted with the epoxy - if so, then no amount of polish or wet sanding will make that roof consistent again in my opinion. As once you sand into the layers on the carbon cloth it changes colour.

I'd take it to a carbon specialist and see if they can tell what it is.

Tom that's my view, as soon as I removed the antenna l spotted this. Tried with the rotary and some paste and its clean & smooth. My fear is its a reaction below the clear coat although how I have no idea. Same place, same tape, same everything for the past 5 years.

                Wanted!!!
Genuine new CSL roof for a REAL owner :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry:

For this reason I've always placed my vbox GPS on the metal not the carbon.

Like NZ, it looks like a reaction to the adhesive and may well machine polish out with a skilled detail.

                    Hope so for you buddy.

Carbon is fairly versatile when it comes to repairs. Replacing your roof seems like overkill. I'd imagine it would be expensive and a ballache to do. If it was me, i'd rather a touched up factory fitted roof than a new non factory fitted roof if you get what I mean.

If something has reacted as Tom suggests, couldn't it be wet dried back to bare carbon, then re clear coated, either locally or the whole roof? The laquer would have be done by a pro and baked. To avoid removing the roof, you'd have to put the whole car in the oven. I am not sure up to what temperature you could do that, but i'd have thought you could cure laquer at a lower temp, it will just take longer. It must get close to 55deg in direct sun in summer (ok, not in the UK :birdman:, but in Oz and SA it does), so prob could put the car in an oven at 60 deg say. Dunno, any painters reading the forum? Whatever the case, I think you'd want to do it at the lowest temp possible, just incase the heat causes problems for any of the interior adhesives (remembering door trims falling off on hot days).

It has pulled the clear coat off the carbon it needs wet and dry sanded back It will then need washed with clean water to remove any dust and left to dry

When its washed you will see if it has been sanded enough to blend in with the rest of the roof.

Then it needs 3 or 4 coats of clear laqure applied and will be as good as new
heat wont do any harm to the roof as prepreg carbon needs cured at around 120 or gas mark 2 :hahaha::hahaha::hahaha:
