    E36 intermittent power loss

    Impossible intermittent power loss

    my e36 328i has a weird issue.
When the car is cold and I start it it runs fine, and it will run fine forever as long as I don’t turn it off. If I turn it off and back on without letting it fully cool down though, it will suddenly decide to feel like it has 100hp, it will struggle to rev to. I’ve replaced vanos solenoid, fuel filter, and camshaft position sensor(bought a Hella one) I still have a code for the cam position sensor though

any help is appreciated as I am completely lost.

New cam position sensors are made incorrectly. You can try a genuine one or try to find an original low mileage used one.

A warm-start-only issue plus a persistent camshaft position sensor code points more to a wiring or connector problem than a bad sensor. I'd check the cam sensor wiring, connector, and engine grounds, and scan live data to see if the cam signal drops out. The DME can go into a reduced-performance mode when it loses the cam signal, which matches your symptoms.
