Are Synthetics Really Necessary?

I've got my oil change coming up with my engine having 74K miles on it. The service people said the manual calls for regular oil, 5W-30 I think he said but not sure. They'll obviously put synthetic in it if I tell them too because they want my money but he directly told me that isn't what the specifications call for. What do you guys think?



I'm sure if you are going to torque down on your engine all the time you will want synthetics, but what about the regular day drivers......... the automatics?
