So I got my codes read today at a local shop. The guy said that my cats had failed along with my O2's. Does the OBD II pick up a failed cat? What is my best option here because I know BMW cats can be hella expensive? Thanks.

I was told by a small town foreign auto place that works on quite a few bimmers that there isn't a sensor to detect a bad cat. It is showing a bad o2 (there are four of them, so you need to figure out which one) and if you run your car for a while with a bad o2 running rich, you could plug the cat up. I think your dealer is trying to make some coin!

for OBDII, your car can read a bad cat. It does this by the o2 sensors. So if an O2 sensor is failing it could cause the cat code to be thrown. And then when it adjusts to run lean to try to clean out the cat it sees the o2 sensor is not responding quickly, thus throwing that code.
You can go to autozone and buy an obd code reader and eraser for 100 bucks. Great investment. Checks and clears the check engine light and every car 96+. Tells you exactly where your car hurts. I'm hoping that my bad cat code is a function of a bad o2 sensor. I'll know soon enough for mine. Good luck with yours. If thats the case I'm just buying a track pipe and o2 sims from aatuning.
