    Bad Idle & Awful Rattle

I have been having really bad problems at idle when i first start my car, even when i try to accelerate out of my parking spot, it sputters and wants to stall, and at idle i hace an extremely bad rattle, seems like only when the electric fan is on????

i have a 1999 model and it does the same thing especially when the temperature is cold. the car does not want to move the first minute or so. you give the car gas but the response is delayed and rough. anyone else having this problem? i hope this does not end up costing a fortune to rectify!

i have the same issue,.. and my rattle is right around idle,... but goes away with even a little gas,.. sounds like a heat shield, or something, i havnt had time to really look into it,.. but i have heard lots of people complain about the hesitation on a cold start,.. mine does it too,.. i just give it a min and dont abuse it while its waking up...

Well, the cold start issue is a very common problem throughout most BMW's. Especially our cars and the new M3s. Theres a software update released by BMW a few years back for the DME to help smooth out the cold start... but only a little.

Your best bet is to let the car idle until it smooths out then start going. Dependong on ambiant tempature, this could be anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute.

Is the rattle comming from the area that sounds like its by the transmission? The heat shields on the cats are known to come loose and rattle like a SOB. You can either remove them, jamb a large screws up inbetween the shield and cat (what I did), or find someone to tack-weld them back into place.
