    Starter Question

My car seems to have a minor problem. It has done this since the day I bought it(7/04). I think that the starter is tight. The starter makes a "zinging" noise after a few seconds after start up. It doesn't happen everytime. Is there a way shim the starter? Do any of you seem to have this same problem? Thanks!

Does it not start the car when it does that noise? Forcing you to restart try to restart the car again?

Does it make a clunking noise also when it does this zinging noise, after you turn it off.

It still starts, it actually makes the noise like a quarter second after the engine has kicked on. I am almost positive that it is the starter being tight. My dad and I had to replace the starter on our motor home(454). After we put it in, it also made this zinging noise. He asked the guy he bought the starter from and he told him that he needed to shim it. He bought the shim and put it in, and it fixed the problem. Any ideas?

I don't know about it being tight, but when these starters get old, their soilinoids go bad in them, and it doesn't catch the flywheel, and it just runs.

Sounds like your are going to need a starter. Like the bendix is going bad. I dont think it would be wise to Shimm the starter. You could end up with a bad fly wheel if you do. The starter is positioned by a location stud in the bell housing. If you can find someone that can test total current draw when you start the car this should tell if the starter is binding. Some of the US (ford, chevy, ect. ) used shimms to set starter depth so they could use many starters for many of the cars built.

Are you sure it's the starter. It may be the belt beginning to spin. My old camaro had that problem. Sounds like the pulley spins for a second and then the sound goes away when the belt latches on and begins to spins with the pulley. Is it a brief hi-pitched screech like you would get if you floored the car from a stand still.

I would recommend having someone start the car while you stand there with the hood open and try and locate where the noise is coming from. I have a whining noise when my car starts up from the fan that blows air into the OBD II device. It's nothing to worry about until the fan motor decides to konk out.

What does the OBDII device look like? Could someone please put up a picture or give a clear description? Thanks a lot!
