e36 OBD I fault code reading

I did a search and didn't see any threads on this...plus any info I have found on the internet on reading your fault codes (on an OBD I M3) is exactly the same, and left me frustrated and thinking that it could not be done.

HOWEVER, I have figured it out

Hopefully this is helpfull to someone...

Basic directions that you will find on getting your fault codes:

*turn the ignition on (don't start the engine)

*press gas pedal to the floor five times within 5 seconds

*Check Engine Light will turn on for 5 seconds and go off

*CEL will blink on again, for 2.5 seconds, then off

*CEL will start with a series of short, consecutive blinks spaced close toghether (3 quick blinks means 3 is the first digit)

*It will blink off for 2.5 seconds between each series of quick blinks, designating that it is giving you the next digit

*It will give you blinks for 4 digits and this is your fault code

NOW, these directions are great, but for a newb such as myself who has never done this before, there are a couple of details left out that, if not followed, will prevent the code from being transmitted.

1)There are 2 key positions that you can be in without having the engine start:

a)barely turn the key- my stereo comes on and just one red light on the instrument cluster (I forget which one). This is NOT what you want.

b)turn the key as far as you can go without starting the engine. At first all of the lights on your instrument cluster will come on, and then most will die out, leaving a couple still on (including the check engine light). THIS IS what you want.

    2) The one thing I found crucial, that I was not doing before, and thus preventing the codes from spitting out, was to start hitting the gas 5 times IMMEDIATELY after the key is turned on.

So turn the ignition on, all the lights on your instrument cluster will come on, and while they are still on IMMEDIATELY begin hitting the gas pedal to the floor. One, Two, Three, Four, Five, all the way in and out but done fairly quickly. You should get the first couple of presses in before the majority of lights turn off in your instrument cluster. Then the CEL will flash.

I don't know if it's just me, but this was not intuitive. I wanted to wait a sec after turning the ignition on, to make sure everything was "set and ready" before I began the procedure. This was my problem.

    Hopefully this helps.

I just tried it, and it worked. I got the code 1-2-2-4. Now I need to figure out what that signifies. Do you know of any sites that have the codes and what they mean?

Thanks for this, its going to help me a lot.

Check your Bently Manual, the codes are in there. Also, Google is your friend, here's a link to the codes http://www.bimmerzone.com/fcodes.htm

The 1224 is your Intake Air Temperature Sensor.
