Bar's Leaks' head gasket in a bottle

my headgasket was starting to go. would get some steam from the exhaust under deceleration. So since I did not have the time or money to pull the head and fix it propperly........I went to autozone and bought some head gasket/ block seal. I figure what did I have to loose. Well after treating the engine I have put over 3K miles on it and it has only used about a PINT OF WATER!.

I am a sceptic and did not think it would work but I had to try something, so I could make it to work the next day. knock on wood-- it will hold until I can get my truck runnin and can pull the engine out and give it a complete rebuild or a swap to a real engine(ls2).

that garbage is more trouble than it's worth. it has the potential to ruin your head, waterpump and heatercore.

    don;t be cheap.

just driving has the potential to ruin said parts.

the engine has 130K on it so who cares if it hurts it. I am just looking for an excuse to put a real engine in the car this winter.

I had to get to work in the morning, so it was my only option as I do not keep gasket kits on hand.

the "trouble" is in following the directions on the bottle. The key seems to be flushing ALL the antifreeze out of the engine. Since most people are illiterate I could see some people screwing things up.

It had nothing to do with being cheap, it was a matter of getting where I had to be the next day.

I figured it like this. head gasket is starting to leak (only water into the #6 cyl on deceleration, no water in oil) if I pull the head I am gonna have to give it a valve job and some portwork and cams, while it is off (I hate wrenching just to repair, if I have that much time in it, it will get some better parts while it is apart). then it is gonna suk oil past the 130 thousand mile rings. So I will have to pull the whole engine out and put some new pistons in it after a bore job.then I will need new software and injectors and .............................

OR I could try my luck with a tune up in a bottle. I must have been lucky because I have logged over 3 thousand miles since that fateful day.

I suppose as you say your not worried about the motor, but products like that clog up your rad on a vehicle that already has cooling issues.

You don't need new pistons if your going to rebuild the motor. That would be a waste of $1700 if they aren't cracked.

Regardless, hope you continue to have luck. It would **** if you overheated your car and your head cracked or you burnt the valves.

if somethng bad was gonna happen it would have long ago.

a set of CP pistons wont set me back more than 800.00. they will be lighter and stronger and ready for the bottle.

I would just get the necessary torque wrenches and ratchets and pull apart the e36 to the gaskets. Then again I work at a mechanic shop. And where are you seeing CP pistons for under 800 assuming that youre buying 6 pistons?

You all missed the point (l was not clear in my first post)

I was in a pinch and decided to gamble on a "headgasket in a bottle"

to my suprise, it worked with no harmful side effects. ( who knows what I will find when I pull it apart)

I know professional mechanics hate things like that especially when they work and put the mech's foot in his mouth. I talked to a friend of mine who used to work for NASA and he said they used similar stuff to seal parts on the space capsule's propulsion system, back in the 1960's.

I know some of the guys at CP and have a good friend who is a distributor for them and he will get my his cost. I can get good deals if anyone needs some in the future.

So what is your logic behind your disapproval of the bar's product http://www.barsproducts.com/1100.htm

have you used it. did it fail to perform? did you follow the directions, or are you so smart that you are above reading directions? maybe you just did not understand them.

Check the join dates. I am not one of the first people to sign up but I was here long before dbagTHO signed up and started flaunting his wealth of information. He still seems to have that "I drive a 5-0, and if you talk bad about it your a moron" mentality. His crap stinks just like everyone elses, and he likes to make sure everyone can smell it because it makes him feel less "stupider"

I asked for some data from him regarding where he got his opinion. Information with out supporting data is opinion. opinions are like aholes, every one has one, some just stink more than others.
