    e36 > e46 for first track car?

For a more dedicated track car that is street legal... I'm being advised to go with an affordable high mileage e36 in good condition

Aside from your own preference of one car over the other, what are the advantages of going with the e36 besides initial cost?

Is it less expensive to maintain, even though it's older?

Is there more headroom in the e36 over e46 (for the latter I would have to find a manual seat with no sunroof example, and even then with helmet on it is tight).

    Thanks for advice.

Is the engine more reliable for track use?

Cheaper cheaper cheaper.. If I had to do it all over again, I would have had an E30 3 series for a track car.. in both the E36 and E30 3, if you break something, parts are a dime a dozen because they are compatible with many many vehicles.. The E46 M3 on the other hand, you blow that motor and its ova.. Between the two, I would do an E36 over the E46.. .eventhough the E46 would be just as fun..

on a side note... I am noticing how many people have a bmw AND porsche.. maybe we should make a P-car/Bmw club :P

As a driver's car, I find the E36 to be much better. It has a lot more feel and it's a lot lighter.

As far as room, it's a lot tighter than the E46.

cheaper, lighter, just as common (if not far more common on the track)

headroom is tighter? I need to go sit in one right away and see.

There are examples with no sunroof like the e46's, right?

I'm tall and fat and have plenty of headroom with the helmet.

There are examples with no sunroof, but they are few and far between.

As somone said, they are few and far between with no sunroofs. I think you should be fine though. If Phil can fit (7'), then you'll be ok.
