i bought all new parts when doing my brakes, but i didnt buy the clips on the caliper cause i know i wont break them. all wear and tear parts get replaced, but its not a wear and tear part.

did oyu really just compare surgery on a living human being with removing a simple mechanical clip?

exactly.. doesnt matter how much it costs... it's not a wear and tear item... no reason to buy new ones

Whatever, it took me longer to remove those 2 clips (2 minutes) than it took me to remove the fan...and theres multiple threads on how to remove that. Mine did not break, but they were brittle, and being the 3rd owner of the car I did not know what kind of treatment they had been exposed to.

You yourself mentioned that you probably have some laying around in your expanse of spare parts (which is where my old ones went), most people probably don't. For me it was worth the insurance to be able to complete the job in 2 hours on my first try and not be held up by stupid ish. My basis for buying new ones was the tech bulletin from Pelican that said they can be difficult and break at times.

Different people have different situations. I am literally only home on weekends and did not have time to do this job in bits and pieces...if I did I could have went out and removed the clips to see how easy it actually was before I ordered all of the parts.

I acquired my spares from friends cooling system upgrades where they bought new ones, and just gave me their old ones....

Thats fine and all, but I still don't think its fair to say having at least one spare around isn't worth $1.50 when you are making an over $200 parts order, even if you are 99% immune to error.

Thumbs up on the DIY though, its halfway silly to have for the process, but it probably will help a few people out.

the major cause of the DIY was for people who forgot to order the clips or whatever, and are in a position like you were in, where you only have one day to do it, you are all prepped to go, and realize "oh shiet, I forgot to order the clips" and BAM ... now you know how to remove them properly without breaking them, so you can continue with your plans and do the cooling system overhaul...

I never realized I would get so much shiet for a DIY on parts that people break all the time, instead of learning how to properly remove them..

Is that how they work? I always used a propane torch to melt them off. Thought they were one time use only.
