If it's going to a mechanic what's the problem? Something shorted out and melted, that's what the smoke was. Since you might still have a short, then it could explain why certain things are still "on".

It's those eyebrows you got on there...take those off and your problems will cease.

did you jump-start another car with your car? same thing happened to me with my blower motor fuse after jumping a car, even after following precautionary measures.

All modern electrical circuits run on smoke. When something breaks and lets the smoke out, electronics don't work correctly anymore.

Sounds like you've got a great mechanic though. He'll have the electrical system repaired and refilled with smoke again in no time.

These wires can get cut due to their age and being folded when closing the trunk and cause an electrical fire from grounding out the wires. Do a search at bf.c, I avoided disaster while troubleshooting license plate light bulb issues.

I liked the smoke in the wires. Classic tale.

I remember when I got my engine rebuilding certificate or whatever, those of us who had worked on cars had few folks believing in a "piston return spring." We thought it was funny...i mean c'mon.

so a short in the back could have caused the wires to melt or smoke up front?
