have you ever checked out Alien Bee's lights? I've been kickin those around a bit and they work pretty well. No need to get Profoto's unless your getting paid gigs.

I've also been using Canon 580 EX II's. A pair of those with some wireless triggers. Cheaper route, but still decent gear.
