can a o2 sensor make your car run like ****...cause i did the pedal test and it came back "1221" which is pretty much this:Lambda (O2) Sensor 1...so im assumeing that i need to change it if its throwing me this code??right....

It sure can, but you really need to do a little more diagnostic work to be fully sure if that's the problem. Any other codes? How are the Long & Short-Term Fuel Trims (this is key since it'll let you know if the car is running rich or lean)? How does the car drive, define "sh*t"? I guess most will just tell you to replace the O2 sensors.
The best thing is to get a good scan tool or know someone who has one, and look at the O2 sensors output. Making sure it responds quickly and is constantly switching from lean to rich.

What? Long term and short term fuel trims? OBDI is only short term, obdII is only long term. I don't think there is a such thing as both...???Originally posted by bmwpowere36m3It sure can, but you really need to do a little more diagnostic work to be fully sure if that's the problem. OP, don't beat around the bush like he's recommending -- if it tells you the O2 sensor is bad, it means it is not getting the expected voltage range from the O2 sensor, which means the sensor is bad. There's no other reason for it to show this code.

Didn't realize his car was OBDI, missed the pedal test However, on OBDII there are both LTFT's and STFT's. However STFT's get reset every time the car is shut down. If the STFT is persistent, it eventually becomes a LTFT.Originally posted by epj3What? Long term and short term fuel trims? OBDI is only short term, obdII is only long term. Just replacing the sensor because you get a code, with proper diagnosis is foolish. Sure he might luck out and it'll be the O2 sensor, however many times the failure is more complex (i.e. another part, outside contributing factors).
Proper diagnosis is needed, however many lack the tools or capital to get it properly diagnosed. Thus blindly replace components based on fault codes... just saying in general.
So, code 1221 indicates: "Oxygen Sensor #1," corrective action: "Check sensor output signal to DME control module." This is too vague a fault, you really need a scan tool to determine the problem. Has the sensor's heating element failed, is the switching time correct, is it not seeing the expected signal, etc...? If you had a large intake leak or fueling problem, the O2 sensor will send a signal that the engine is not expecting as well...

i looked online and the code 1221 says o2 sensor!!riddle me this....i went to a shop a they said a p1221 is a throttle position sensor!!wtf...could the internet be wrong!!!omg!!so i changed that and now im not getting any codes!!!when i do the pedal test...what does it mean when it blinks once and thats it???i am lost right now...on the whole code thing!!my othe question is:the car takes about 2 or 3 try's for it to turn on??it turns and turns but does not kick on...the computer has been chipped from the last owner...could that be it???i mean it turns on but,it takes a couple of try's in order for it to turn on!!has this happened to anyone else!!helpppppppppppppp

Priceless , that's what I meant with proper diagnosis... you'd be out $100+ and still need a TPS sensor. It's not always as simple as what the code says.Originally posted by shreker....i went to a shop a they said a p1221 is a throttle position sensor!!wtf.... so i changed that and now im not getting any codes!!!....
As far as the codes themselves... depending on what method/device you use, each has their own set of codes that don't always match up. If you're doing the pedal test, then something like a Bentley Manual will decipher what the codes mean or a copy of BMW TIS. If you have a scanner like a Peak, it has a user manual that defines its own codes.
