Sounds like the snorkel to me. There's a flat-oval type piece inside the box which people refer to the baffle.

Anyone done the brake duct mod at the bottom?

Ok I de-baffled. So removing the snorkel is positive too eh? Interesting. Why would BMW feel it's better to have one

You been reading your own thread?

Snorkel removal gives a nice deep roar. At the cost of a little throttle response, and especially on warm days, power.

BMW is right, it IS better to have one.

I didn't notice anything power related, but yeah about a week after taking out I heard a nice little note coming from under the hood on anything above like 3.5k (IIRC, it's been a whiile since driving my M3).

The baffle is the little think your talking about thats located on the interior of the airbox. The snorkel is the tubing that goes up to the drivers kidney grill for fresh air.

Removing the baffle did give me the roar. Maybe it's not the roar you're thinking of with the de-snorkel (if there is such a roar).

                  synenergy:

                  1) Go out to your car.

                  2) Detach the snorkel (you don't even have to remove it... just detach).

                  3) Get in car and drive.

It takes less then like 10 seconds to do, just go try it out.

Cut half of the snorkel off so it still directs in cold air bit isn't restrictive, break off the water ingestion flap with pliers, take the baffle out. Anyone that doesn't do this is selling themselves short.

Not that any of it matters. But removing the snorkel is bad. It's purpose is to get fresh air and create ram air at high speeds. The snorkel was most likely put in as a noise restriction and does not create turbulence or effect resonance. Removing it does increase CFM into the intake tract with no sacrifices. That said it will have very little impact( basically nothing) on performance.

Meh. I'm not saying ram air is crucial, especially for most people and the speeds we go the most but it isn't worth the added air you might get especially if ASC, the stock manifold ect. are in place. But mainly I'm not sure about the pressure difference (Bernoulli's principle) and the disruption to the chamber. I would say a better idea along those lines is to get euro snorkel and remove ASC as for a little added flow and no down sides.

I have found that with the snorkel removed, the car will choke...and you actually lose power...although you do get geat sound.

With just the baffle removed, it is slightly louder in the higher rpms, but i think it also breathes better. I believe the earlier M50 cars did not have a baffle in the box from the factory. I am pretty sure this baffle is to quiet the car down.

Modding cars for sound rather while losing power FTL. Anyone smell rice?

Well I think the de-baffle doesn't take power away.. possibly the desnorkel does.. but i'd bet that any difference would be negligible whether + or -

There are a few of us who once had CAI's (Shielded and not) and are back on the factory airbox.
