Low rpm jerking/clunking, low speed or from a stop

    Hey all,

So I got my car back from the shop after getting the Guibo and driveshaft U-joint as well as some exhaust hangers replaced. It drove fine for about 200 miles, then this issue cropped up.

It only affects the car when I start driving from a very low speed or being stopped. Naturally the RPM's are also usually low at this point <2000.

What happens is I will let the clutch out and be easing on the accelerator (just normal manual gearbox operation) and as I start moving it feels like the differential or something jerks. Almost like its not turning but then suddenly starts. I sometimes jerks a couple times for about 2 seconds then the car drives fine. This happens at ALMOST every take off. The car runs to redline great and is smooth everywhere else. Not sure if it has something to do with weight transfer from low speeds or what.

I considered maybe torn rear subframe but it feels like something in the driveline, not something clunking around loose.

    Any ideas?

This same thing happend to me about 1000 miles ago. When referring to bentley, it was determined that there was excessive ring/pinion gear clearence in the differential. Removing the differential and further investigation resulted in 6 allen heads in the diff had sheared off causing the clutch pack to come loose inside. It's a disgustingly common problem that seems to follow when people change to a non OE diff fluid. Some seem to think that RP and REDLINE may be eating the loctite that holds these bolts in causing them to come loose.....

Get under your car after jacking up the rear and put tranny in neutral, twist the driveshaft by hand back and forth. Do you hear play/clunking in the diff as you change rotation directions?

Its really interesting you say this, because I just had the fluid changed with some Redline probably about 2 months ago.

When the car is in neutral if i punch the gas really quick and let off it makes the stuttering, sounds exactly what your talking about with the twisting driveshaft.

Unfortunately I live at an apt and dont have any jackstands. Is this something that would be simple for a good shop to fix? It's just pulling the cover and putting in some screws right?
