Looking for some Troubleshooting Help and Advice..!!

well i've been having some issues with my passenger window not working on my 95 m3 coupe, just frozen in the up position for some time now. its been random when it does work. Im having trouble trying to figure out exactly where my issue is coming from. so let me tell you what i have tried so far, and maybe you can give me some ideas on what to try next....

So far i have tried to swap the UP/DOWN switches from the drivers and passengers side and its still INOP. when pressing the up or down switch i can hear and electronic noise as if its giving power to the motor but nothing happens. i figured either the Motor was frozen, or the motor itself was bad. so then i proceeded to removed the door panel and tried to tap the motor with a hammer to maybe free it up, and it didnt work. then i removed the two connectors and blew out any dust in there made sure it was clean and reconnected it....still nothing. lastly i decided to hold the switch in the down position with the connectors off and then connect the connectors while still holding down the switch. i put in the first connector and nothing, but when connecting the 2nd suddenly the window jerked a lil and started to roll down and back up! now i was really happy that it was working again. i reattached the door panel and have been driving it with it working with no issues for about 3 weeks now. so im assuming its not the motor thats bad because it does work, But for some reason it froze back up again on me about 3 days ago and i dont have ANY CLUE as what to try next.

This is soooooo damn frustrating that it just wont work and stop freezing up. IM BEGGING FOR SOME HELP AND IDEAS ON WHAT TO TRY NEXT, I'LL TRY ANYTHING!!!!

Let me get this straight... to try to solve the issue you:

    1) Swapped the switches

    2) Poked it with a hammer...

    3) Blew on the connectors...

    4) Messed around with the switches again?

What do you think is gonna result from those? I mean swapping the switches is understandable, but everything after that is going to do absolutely NOTHING to solve or identify the problem.

The problem is the pressure sensor in the window motor. It's there to sense obstructions so that it doesn't crush someone's hand and get them into a lawsuit. Over time, the system binds up due to normal wear and lack of grease.

Now to SOLVE the problem, (and this is where I have no personal experience but I think the idea is sound) you're going to have to try and free up the system. Maybe it's the window regulator, maybe it's the little gearbox in the motor, maybe it's how the window is sliding against the door seals. I don't know. I would open it up again, take a good look at everything (as in pull it apart), and grease/lubricate as necessary.

well i was just taking some suggestions from people i knew and they recommended trying those things....but anyways....Thats sounds like something to try. yea i never literally tried to pull the motor and regulator off so i guess that's what i'll do next. as far as the grease/lubrication goes....what would you recommend me to use on everything if i feel i need to grease or lub it up?

      Thanks for your help.

From my experience it is the motor. Just my opinion but as long as I have been working on these cars if I was going to replace the motor I would do the regulator also. It is a pain to drill the rivets if it hasn't been done already and to go through all that trouble and have the regulator break two months later would really be a

I tend to agree with eezzyk above but if you want to try small things before going for the big kill: Replace the two plastic sliders that are the interface between the regulator and the window itself. When doing this, completely clean all the old dried grease in all the rails, moving parts and replace with fresh new grease. The sliders are cheap and you might get lucky.

          BUT

I wouldn't put on the door panel until the above has worked for a week or so, as I suspect you will end up needing a motor and/or regulator. And if you are replacing one you might as well do both since they are a pain to get to and both have years of service.

          good luck
