i've always hated these things with a passion since i started driving and the car i had at the time had one that would always malfunction at the wrong times leaving me stranded. so while installing a new head unit in the new M3 last weekend i found the immanence of an old alarm system. i immediately went to town getting it out of the car. when i go to start the car the car today it wont start. jump the starter and the engine turns over its obviously due to some of the damn wires i cut to get the alarm system out. now i'm looking at wiring diagrams hoping that the installer did not remove the anti theft control module. i've got lots to look forward to the next couple of days, so i just wanted to vent my frustration.

It made sense to me.Originally posted by autocross97you are hilarious, if you only had a clue.
The car worked fine...you cut some wires...now the car doesn't start. I fail to see how this is the fault of the alarm system.
I'm sorry you're frustrated with the situation. But like he said...don't cut wires if you don't know what they do.

i'm upset with people who put shitty systems like this on cars. the alarm system was not factory it was spliced into a dead harness (not attached to anything) behind the glove box between the splice box to its left and all the control modules to its right. i cant find it on any wiring diagrams, and its not attached to anything on two of my friends cars. my best guess is its for the optional key less entry but thats just a guess.
i know it was an after market alarm which means it did not come with the car and the car will function without its presence. i fail to see why all of you would just leave the thing alone if you had no key fob or remote for the thing?

Previous owner did something wrong. You ofcourse want to fix it. I see no problem with this. But you went about it the wrong way. You can't just start cutting wires willy nilly. It's not the car or previous owners fault, its yours.Originally posted by autocross97i'm upset with people who put shitty systems like this on cars. the alarm system was not factory it was spliced into a dead harness (not attached to anything) behind the glove box between the splice box to its left and all the control modules to its right. i cant find it on any wiring diagrams, and its not attached to anything on two of my friends cars. my best guess is its for the optional key less entry but thats just a guess.

Sigh these cars are getting too cheap.

Yea, the molested ones are a dime a dozen it seems. But the truly nice examples are hard to find and holding their value quite well.Originally posted by AngrywhopperPrevious owner did something wrong. You ofcourse want to fix it. OP, you're gonna have to start tracing wires. The electrical systems in these cars don't react well to ham-handed installations. Get your voltmeter, take a deep breath, and dive in. If you're not comfortable with automotive electrical systems (and BMW's are touchy), then bite the bullet and hire a professional. Just poking around can make a bad situation worse in a hurry, as you've already found out.
Sorry you have to deal with this mess. Good luck.

We know you're an impulsive, and we know you have a compulsion to tackle projects you don't have the skills or knowledge to complete. That's usually a slippery slope in the E36 community....Originally posted by autocross97wow you're throwing me into that category and yet you don't know a damn thing about me. aren't you Mr. cool

there you go making assumptions again, i've got the skills to tackle the project on my own, sometimes it makes things go quicker if you can talk to someone who has been there before, which is simply all i'm doing. generally there is a lot of info on knowledge on forums (obviously not the case here). i'll leave you guys alone and let you take your cars to shops who do all your work for you.

i never understand why people want aftermarket alarm systems installed in these cars (or any european cars). they all have built in immobilizers and keys can only be ordered from the dealer and they come direct from BMWNA.
an alarm system is just an audible deterrent. if anyone wants your car that bad, an alarm isn't going to stop them.
OP.....i have no idea what you did or didn't do. if the car started before you removed wires, then something points towards you at this stage. maybe its just a coincedence.......checked fuses? maybe a bad key or EWS unit? at this point who knows, but whatever blame/criticism you get from here just take it with a pinch of salt.
if anyone is that worried about their car being stolen then perhaps invest in a vehicle tracking system or import a thatcham cat 1 alarm system fromt he UK. all these alarms have to be installed in a hidden location, all wires are black (which are labelled prior to install) and incased in metal

You've got it all wrong, almost nobody on this forum brings their E36's to shops.....
Hard to help or diagnose someone who gives very limited information on the subject though - and although you might have some idea of what you're doing, you did cause the problem yourself by trying to pull out the alarm. I'd had done the same thing if it were my car, but then it'd be my fault also...

So, what question was the forum unable to answer? By your own admission, you're just venting. You gave no specific information, asked no questions. Not even any pics. Your own posts indicate your actions made a bad situation worse.Originally posted by autocross97there you go making assumptions again, i've got the skills to tackle the project on my own, sometimes it makes things go quicker if you can talk to someone who has been there before, which is simply all i'm doing. generally there is a lot of info on knowledge on forums (obviously not the case here). i'll leave you guys alone and let you take your cars to shops who do all your work for you.
You will not find a better source of information involving the e36M anywhere on the web. Calm down, swallow your pride, and formulate some specific questions. Otherwise, good luck.
