It drives me crazy because the car goes in a garage when I'm at work and I have a garage at my house. The only time its left outside is when I'm running errands
That has to really sting - you do everything you can to protect your property and this shit happens while you're keeping in shape with your girlfriend.

My g/f is actually the one who saw it first, being that its on the pass. side, and the minute she said my name and I saw her face, I knew EXACTLY what it was. My heart dropped to my feet...
Someone did the same thing to my car last summer. I didn't even bother filing an insurance claim. It's a much thinner scratch than yours, but just as deep. I'll probably just fix it myself. It won't be perfect, but neither will painting one side of the car, as I doubt that they'd match the 11 year-old paint perfectly.
I am sooo sorry to see this. I think most of us have a fear of this in the back of our minds so we can appreciate how awful this is.
If I were to just show you this picture with no context (such as a thread about paint jobs), you might not easily notice that the bumper cover is not exactly the same as the rest of the panels.
That was from the 3rd attempt to get the proper blend so it can get even better.
Look at it from this angle and it gets even less noticable.
Just showing you that there is a road to recovery so don't get too down.
I'll add my disgust at humanity. Sorry for your loss. Both my cars were keyed. I just left the Black one as is. It is a right of passage in Toronto when you own a BMW. On the Blue E46 Wagon, I bought some touch up paint and Langara . It is a product designed to eliminate the Blobs you get with touch up paint. After a couple of hours of playing with it, my scratch is kinda gone from ten feet. Not like new paint, but my panel is still original paint.
I'm really sorry to see this, Kev. I wish I could offer advice, but fortunately for me I've never had to deal with this type of incident. Keep us updated and best of luck getting her back to tiptop shape.
Kevin, my entire passenger side is re-sprayed due to 2 cars hitting me while I was stopped at a traffic light (rear-end and passenger door) last winter. A reputable shop will be able to do it perfectly.
They installed another OE passenger door and had to re-spray the entire passenger side to match color.
I am trying to see if I have those pictures online, I'll post them later today for you to judge.
Anyone have thoughts on cost? I reported it to insurance. I would love for the whole car to be painted since its tough to blend color but I doubt insurance would be okay with that.
Same f&*% happened to me when I had my 99 drop top. F'n haters!!! Usually people that want one that they can never afford!
I don't think most people know how much these things really cost, and if they knew they were cheaper than their 2010 kia soul, they might think otherwise...
the fact that these cars are still so sharp and are M's dooms them
Kevin, this sucks. You didn't do anything to deserve this kind of headache.
I don't much care for Mass for a lot of reasons, and this is one of them. There's a lot of super rich yuppies in Boston who make enough to afford insanely high taxes, and then impose them on the rest of us. There's a lot of (justifiable) resentment, and unfortunately people don't realize that driving a late 90s M3 does not make you rich. Most of us are anything but.
I was thinking about what I would do in this situation--since the paint's never going to be mint again, maybe spring for an Avus repaint?
