    ZKW Projectors with HID Kit's

    Hey all,

I have the ZKW projectors with a nice flat cutoff, but with a crappy HID kit that came with the car. I'm thinking it's around 6000K in color temp as well. I am going to a 4300K set and curious if anyone has shots of a ZKW projector with 35w versus 55w HID's. I'm looking for beam spread on the ground, as well as cutoff shots on a wall. I don't want to blind people with the additional output. Just to confirm, these are H1 bulbs?

Also, any idea what size bulb is in there? Looks like a 194 but please correct me if I am wrong - I want to go to LED's.

    Thanks!

EDIT: Here are the requested cutoff shots in my M. Pardon the quality, I only had time to snap a few quick cell phone shots tonight...

I have 55W in my ZKWs with a nice cutoff. No pics unfortunately but my bulb type is H1. With a projector lens you can get away with 55w. In stock housings I wouldn't put in 55.

Where in Manayunk are you btw? I'm in elkins park.

The bulbs that belong in the headlights are H1's. The HID capsules that are in them are frankenstein "bulbs" that are made by putting an H1 (halogen bulb) base on an HID capsule. The nomenclature gets funky, as some people call them H1 HID's (which is an oxymoron, seeing as H1 are halogens), some people call them H1 re-based HID's, etc. As long as you get something with an H1 base, and get proper ballasts, they'll work.

55W will just be more intense light, with the same beam pattern. Though, it's worth noting that due to the fact that you'll be using frankenstein bulbs made in China and not DOT approved, there's no industry standard that says the next set of bulbs you have will have the same dimensions. You may get a set that has the base secured to the HID capsule in a slightly different way, altering the focal point. If you like your light output and just want it brighter, i'd order from the same vendor you got the current bulb set from. Hopefully the bulbs will be similar.

      And one thing.

Thanks for the info. 35w has been okay for me with this setup, but the nasty 6000K+ capsules in there are bugging me out.

I'm a few blocks off of Main Street, not too far from Green Lane. I grew up in Huntingdon Valley though.

Thanks on the confirmation of the rebased H1. Since HID "kits" are cheap, I'm just going to run one of the kit's I prefer until I retro to TSX or LS470, maybe even MB E55 or some E46 bi-xenon's. If I run "kits" and not a true retro I use VVME for my hardware. I've had 1 ballast problem over the course of 20+ kits (ordered for myself and my buddies).

Actually, I do... it's got a modified cutoff shield ;-) It's a nice flat cutoff - no upticks. I'm a big lighting *****. The first upgrade I make to any vehicle after purchase is lighting. I've done full retro's on my Wrangler, Camaro, my Interceptor, prior Jeep's, etc. Not sure if you know this site, but HIDPlanet's forum has been one of my favorite resources for HID, Halogen and LED lighting information. And of course, Daniel Stern as well.

Sure! Once I get the 4300k in there The purple lights that match my paint color are not attractive ... at all!

There are several threads on the flat cut-off for the ZKW's btw: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=514509

Mmhmm, the glare issue bugs me a bit. I was debating a glare shield but haven't looked into them more than for H4 applications. Time for bed though.
