Miss & Running Issue - Burnt Oil Smell Too

    Hey all,

So the dealership I purchased my M3 from seems to have removed my engine splash guard. I am thinking this may be partially to blame for the following. Here's my time line so far...

Tuesday morning (In freezing rain/sleet/slush/rain - My Jeep was at work): Started up fine. Drove to work. While on the highway in 30-50 MPH traffic, approx 15 minutes into my drive, the car started to sputter and miss above 4000 RPM. Did this for my entire 40 minute drive.

Tuesday on lunch (Only puddles and such left): Drove 20 mins round trip to get food. Car was still sputtering, but less than before.

Tuesday afternoon: Car was driving better, minor sputtering here and there.

Wednesday morning: Came outside, started the car. It fired up as normal for 1/2 a second, then the RPM's dropped and the car shut off. Turned the ignition again, same thing. Did it again, giving it gas, and it stayed running. No CEL was present. I let the car warm up for a min or two. It then held idle, but quite low - around 400 RPM. As the car warmed up, so did the idle, finally up to around 900-1000 RPM.

Wednesday on lunch: Car stayed running at startup, but low, 400 RPM, idle was still present. Idle increased as car warmed up. Had oil changed to winter blend of 0w40 Mobil 1.

Wednesday afternoon: Low idle was still somewhat apparent, but now around 700 RPM.

Today: Idle is now normal it seems, at least regarding RPM's. However, I can hear a slight miss, when stopped at a light, etc.

Any thoughts? Maybe one of my coil packs got wet?

Also, probably unrelated ... Prior to the oil change, maybe once a week or less, I would be completely overcome by the smell of burning oil. My g/f was in the car with me last week and even mentioned it. I'm used to burning oil in my Wrangler, but this was far worse of a burning oil smell, but only happened for maybe 15-60 seconds and was done. Idea's? Thanks!

Idle Control Valve (altho that would throw a code when it is completely broke, happened to me) or like you said, a coil pack or other electrical component got wet. As far as the oil smell I have no clue but make sure oil level isnt over filled. Good luck!

I hope it was just a wet coil pack (Or something similar) that dries out soon.

Oil level may have been a little over-filled, but it's good now that the oil has been changed. We'll see how it goes from here with the smell.

icv and valve cover gasket would be my guess.

I'll check the ICV this weekend if I get a free moment.

Oil did it again last night. I had stopped somewhat hard in traffic, then accelerated and smelled it. It was so strong that I had to roll the windows down to evacuate it.

If the oil smell is that bad, a look around under the car and under the hood should reveal where the oil is leaking. It could be the tranny fluid leaking onto the exhaust, too.

As for your missing problem, it sounds like a wet ECU. Did you drive the car through a car wash recently? Check the ECU compartment and if there's moisture in there, check your cowl drains. If they're plugged up, fix that and your problem is solved. Do a search for cowl drains or E36 cowl drains.

What troubleshooting strategy made everyone think of idle control valve when he described it as a 4000rpm misfire? The ICV doesn't do a thing when the motor is not idling... which should have been implied in the name

OP it really sounds like a coil pack or possibly a vacuum leak - I would check your valve cover gasket. Possible vaccum leak + strong burnt oil smell sounds like the valve cover gasket to me (since the valvetrain is under vacuum). I would start with this and see if it fixes it.

              Don't worry about your ICV...

again.. definitely valvecover is partially to blane, at the very least. Please replace it, its cheap.

This may be an ICV issue now. Last night, the idle was off. After driving, then slowly down for a light, the idle would be at 1900 RPM, drop to 1400 RPM, kind of hiccup, then go back to 1900, then down to 1400, hiccup, etc. I could not get it back to normal. At other points it was idling around 800-1100 RPM somewhat normally. Odd. Got it on video as I came home, will post later.

If you had misfires/stumbling at anything above idle, it's not the ICV and the symptoms probably just changed for whatever reason.

Really sounds to me like a bad valve cover gasket, possibly leaking oil onto a spark plug - or a dead coil pack... still no check engine light?

CEL just came on yesterday after idling for 5 minutes at Blue Mountain. I'll pull the codes once I get a free moment. I haven't been this busy in years (Not a bad thing).

Figured I'd post a new update. CEL is off. Idle is normal now. I didn't do anything...
