Even that isn't too hard. Overall a great/easy mod. Hopefully you bought one with less miles than ur car. That was the hard part for me. (88000 miles at the time)

Once the S54 is in I am not really all too worried about the displayed millage. I am not looking to sell the car ever so it'll just be something for me to keep track of service.

The only way to fit the E46 cluster is to cut the dash up.
The man is right! I have the E46 and E36 clusters in front of me, and they are physically different, the E46 cluster is taller and a hair wider, and it won't fit the E36 dash properly without cutting it up. I also have the Z3M S54 cluster.

The Z3M S54 cluster is physically identical to the E36 cluster, but it uses the CAN bus for the tacho and water temp, so they will only work with the S54 DME, you'll only get the speedo and fuel gauge with any E36-era DME.

So then you're saying that the Euro cluster wouldn't be able to pair with the S54 DME?

you can recalibrate the milage to your DME. as long as its a 97+ euro cluster they have the removable chip in the back which you can switch with the cars original. then do the self test calibration and your mileage will pop up!

someone correct me if I'm wrong

If I recall correctly you can go UP in mileage, but not down...

do you think it's possible to retrofit the e46 m3 cluster for the e36 by cutting the superfluous case fiber?

I wish it would, cause I already have it for the s54 swap...........
