Production Numbers: Forty Five Euro-Spec M3s (Canadian Edition)

    From Wikipedia:

In 1994 agreements existed between Canada and several countries in Europe which allowed any car authorized in one participating country to legally be sold in any of the others. Though BMW had unveiled the next generation E36 M3 in Europe in 1992, the company felt that the production version would need to be priced much higher for export to North America than the market would allow. While the engineers worked on a less expensive North American version of the E36 M3, BMW Canada seized the window of opportunity: 45 numbered European specification M3 coupes were specially produced and imported into Canada.

Even with a base price of $59,900 (a substantial sum for the day given that the standard equipment list did not include forged lightweight wheels, air conditioning, a sunroof or even metallic paint), all 45 cars were spoken for in 3 days. Unlike the other special versions of the E36 M3, buyers were free to choose any colors and options they wanted on their cars. The cars all came equipped with the 286 PS (210 kW; 282 hp) 3.0 L inline 6-cylinder engine, vented brakes with floating rotors <citation needed>, glass headlights and other European standard equipment. They were initially delivered to Toronto, then shipped all across the country to the dealerships where they were ordered.

Canada would not see another E36 M3 for sale until two years later, when BMW finally made the American versions of the 1997 M3 available for sale. Forty five Euro-Spec Canadian Edition cars were built, each one having a numbered engraved plaque in both the glove-box and the custom leather case which holds the owners manuals.
All 45 cars are tagged as Individual in the BMW database and are identified by the 0940 special request below.

    0940 Special request

    - All lighting circumferences as ECE.

    - DRL circuit.

    - Omission parking light circuit.

    - 3rd Brake light on rear shelf as E36 U.S.

    - U.S. Ignition switch.

    - Seat belt warning chime.

    - Power windows and electric sunroof as Schl.Nr. 401, but without the comfort control feature.

    - ECE-like instrument cluster series, but fitted with a modified control.

    - E36 rear window as U.S.

    - Rear parcel shelf for 3rd brake light.

    - 3 mounting points for child seats in rear shelf.

    - Side mirrors with US-specific warning.

    TEXT

    - Front license plate panel US-specific.

    - Omission ECE nameplate.

    - ECE windscreen with green wedge as Schl.Nr. 354

    - Valves label English as Schl.Nr. 853
From what I can tell, the numbered plaques located in the glove-box do not coincide with the serial numbers.

The rarest is JC35992 painted in GIALLO (Italian for yellow). I was unable to find a paint code number for this color.

I wonder where the Giallo car is now, along with the one with Buffalo interior. I wonder how many are "enthusiast" owned and on M3F?

when I was shopping. TWO of these cars were up for sale. a dakar and a black one. I checked them out and decided it wasnt worth the premium cost up here given their history. some are time capsules and some have had a hard life... the ones I looked at had a hard life so I went for a cheaper , more cared for us spec.

You can also find JDM imports up here which are essentially the exact same thing minus the plaques and/or special colour combos. (they are also LHD unlike other jdm imports)

          great info btw op.

          example on outlandish pricing

wiki would be wrong on the floating rotor bit, euros didn't get floating front rotors until the 3.2L in '96

Thanks! It's a nice yellow, looks very similar to what Ferrari offered by PPG at that time. Giallo Modena?

                      Thanks Alan!

Maybe the "special 45" were spoiled at the Regensburg factory?

I wonder if a Carfax of WBSBF91010JC35992 would reveal the GIALLO E36M history?

Nice job compiling this list! I have a(n incomplete) database of my own for these cars organized by series number, which itself was determined by the order / lottery position number (and not when each car was actually manufactured).

I know that # 13 (dakar yellow) was used as the press car; it also was the earliest car produced going by V.I.N. information.

I can also confirm the following:

At least two of the cars were purchased by other major automakers for research purposes given the phenomenal properties of the S50B30 for the time.

One of the cars was totaled within a few days of delivery due to a major accident which damaged every body panel. Amazingly the entire contents of the totaled shell were transplanted into a new shell ordered from BMW as the owner had no other means to replace his beloved car.

Another car was totaled before delivery under suspicious circumstances.

At least 15 of the surviving examples are salvaged, some repeatedly.

I've seen the giallo yellow car in person when it was last for sale here in Ontario; I would have purchased it myself but it was just out of my price range at the time. It had 60,000 km or so on it 8 years ago; the colour looked classier than dakar yellow in my opinion (it's a richer tone - the Ferrari colour option from the F355 of the same era), and it was in near flawless condition at that time.

My car would have been the only daytona violet example were it not for a friend of the original owner of my car finding out about the newly added colour option after the original owner of mine had ordered his. That car (# 3) is now a track car, and I actually have a picture of it next to my car - my car was in a car show at the same race track where it was racing that day. If anyone's interested I could dig up that picture and post it for you.

I've updated the list to include the build date as reported in the BMW database. Interesting that the GIALLO and the last Arctic Silver have a much later build date. Maybe BMW assigns the build date upon completion of the build?
