E36 M3 Rough Idle, Sputtering, Backfire, DME, Help...

    95 M3 (05/94 build).

A friend of mine has a 01/94 M3 with a silver label 506 DME. His DME is fried.. and he wanted to see if mine would work since we're both 95'ers. As he was unplugging the harness from my DME, he noticed the connector itself separated from the harness. I suppose that is normal since there's a o-ring around it... Anyway he forgot to disconnect the positive from the battery, I know I know I'm pissed, while he was pulling the it tapped onto the positive connection port and it sparked . I thought he had fried mine too! We noticed then that the DME didn't have a colored label on it but instead it was scratched off and replaced with replacement sticker that says this:

    OEM P/N: 0 261 203 506

    Replacement P/N: 0 261 200 413

The following modifications have been done: ONE DIAG <------ I have no idea to what this means

    Date: 05/13/05

There's a sticker on the side of my DME that also says 0 261 200 413

Now.. after we noticed that the DME was different we just pushed it back in and closed it up. When I tried to start the car it wouldn't start, I tried again it fired up and died, third times the charm. It was running but the idle was rough, oscillating from 500 - 1000 rpm, sputtering and throwing white smoke from my tailpipe. It never did this we didn't even unplug the DME completely.. This mechanic told me it's my harness. but I doubt that? He kept messing with the back of the harness where it connects to the DME and I held the throttle at 2000 rpm's for about 15 seconds and the idle went steady but still seemed low about, about 550- 600. Decided to drive home and I hit a manhole dip and the idle went erratic again, pulled over touched the harness and held the throttle at 2k, went steady proceeded home. On the highway, I notice that it was running fine now, idle was at 700. but when I tired to open her up, it hesitated between 3 - 4000 rpm. Felt like loss in power, like somethings holding it back. Second gear pull was the same thing.. pulled strong till 3000 then hesitation and then strong after 4000. WTH! I took her home left it over night. This morning I started her up to move her and she wouldn't move in 1st gear! It seemed as if she was clogged and no fuel. I removed the positive cable for about 15 minutes to try to "reset" the DME. Started her up and again rough idle now really rough.. oscillating between <500 - 100 rpm's and when she hits low idle it seems like it wants to die. She's sputtering and emitting black smoke.. I believe that means the fuel mixture is too rich?. When I open the throttle slowing, It's like she's hesitant and around when I get to around 2000 the idle is still rough and backfire. i let it idle for about 15 minutes and its still rough, emitting slight smoke from the tailpipe but isn't black. Also there's no CEL on whatsoever.. I didn't want to drive it because I don't want to screw anything else up. Could it be the DME malfunctioning because of touching the positive terminal, the wiring harness, or the DME chip? Anyone know or have any idea to whats going on?

I can't really add much here, but it the problems you describe along with NO CEL points squarely at the DME. Hopefully someone smarter can add more. I would start searching eBay for a newish DME.

Yup that's what I've been doing. Which DME is the correct one: Silver or Red label? 506 or 413? Im confused since mine supposedly had both.
