I just got an E36 M3 and during the first day of driving it around the whole side of the car got covered in tar/oil. I know I can use bug and tar remover to get that off the paint, but I'm concerned using the same product on the matte black door guard trim will end up polishing (and ruining) the trim. Any suggestions on how to get tar off the door trim?

I use Extreme Orange (LINK) from Chemical Guys to remove tar and the like from my car. It doesn't hurt the paint or the black plastic surfaces of the car.
You're safe using most cleaning products (as long as they don't say do not use on plastics), on the door guards. Just keep in mind they are held on with plastic pop clips, so you can pop them loose if you put a little tooo much elbow grease into the cleaning.
