DIY: E36 $14 Cup Holder MOD DIY

Like many, I'm irritated with the upholders in my E36 M3. My M3 is a daily car for me - I have an nsx I drive on weekends so I need to have cup holders that work for my day-to-day activities.

    My main goals were:

    -Keep stock(ish) appearance

    -Cheap

    -Simple

    -Hold today's beverages

    -Friggen work!

I drew inspiration from my poker table and this thread 'http://www.maxbimmer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145877'

To start, I had to find the proper size drop in cup holder. I measured the top lip of the current staged cup holders and found these on eBay which fit best.

In case the link doesn't work in the future - the product description is 'Stainless Steel Poker Table Drink Cup Holder - Item 70-2005' and I'll post a photo of the dimensions

Here's my irritation, a regular soda can doesn't fit, and most places design the bottom of their cup holders to fit the dimensions of a soda can.

    1. Remove the cup holders first

    2. The top stage is all you need to save - if you drop a soda can in, you can see it sits around this first lip. Cut everything below this off - I used a dermal

    3. Finished product after dermal

    4. Place cup holder inside the console, you can see there's only the top lip left.

    5. Place the silver cup in, you will see it doesn't drop in all the way, this fit is extremely tight.

    6. Place soda inside silver cup, inside the cup holder and PUSH DOWN GENTLY, it will go in to place.

    7. Enjoy, this is what mine looks like, I have been using this for a few weeks now and am very happy with the result.

I can finally fit practical beverages. I am happy it fits drive-thru beverages from major fast food places and most other things. This is incredibly practical I feel. Looks OEM and fitment is great. Best $14 I've spent on my E36

Thanks for reading - and hopefully this can help a few people!!!

Looks good! only thing i would do personally is maybe paint it black so it looks flush with the center console.

Nice work! I had planned to do the same thing, except I had imagined I would use black plastic cup holders.

Why would you drink Starbucks? That's like saying an 88 Buick Skylark is one the best sports cars ever made. Don't drink that stuff...it's terrible. There's much better coffee for you money...

Anyways, I might have to try mod this on my car. Nice Work!
