    e46 6 speed swap into e36 m3 ISSUES

Ok here s my problem. I have TOB noise coming from the bell housing. I can hear the whine through the first 4 gears and slightly in 5 and 6.

Heres my list of parts I have used in the car currently.

e46 6 speed transmission 105k miles and was working great with no noise in the donner car I took it out of.

    e46 flywheel

e46 clutch disc (used less then 5 k miles and barely broken in )

e46 oem self adjusting pressure plate ( reset via the diy with the 3 jaw puller)

    e36 piolet bearing

    e46 new oem TOB

    e36 ball pin platic

    e36 clutch fork

    e36 325i slave cylinder

auto drive shaft and 3.38 rear end out of a auto e36 m3

I have placed 3 Throw out bearings in the car over the past 3 weeks. Ive gotten the job timed down to 2:45 min ha ha

At first, I thought it was a new dud of a TOB. figured, heck new parts are sometime manufactured bad. Bought a new one, same noise. Today went in and replaced TOB with one that came out of the e46 with the transmission that was making no noise.

    Still making exact same noise.

my other symptoms are that 1st is easy to go into when at a red light, I start moving and when I push the clutch in, I have to pull it out of 1st. it does not slide out of first. and going into second is a bear. goes in without grinding but extremely grumpy.

3-6 are fine , 3rds a little grumpy but ok and the rest go right in

here is where I'm at in my thought process

I think I may have bent the self adjusting pressure plate during the diy process of reseting it. I see in the UUC clutch kits, they simply hate that bugger from BMW and delete it all together going with a traditional clutch style with a simple PP.

I think that my driving issues as well with the first 3 gears.

Can I install my e36 Pressure plate? are my mounting points the same as the e46? will this work. Ive been in there now 3 times and I'm getting good at it. Only want to be in there one more time.

    HELP

Otherwise the swap is great, no vibrations no issues at all, cruising speed on the highway and rpms are awesome

I'll let u guys know once I get in there if that combo of e36 pp e46 disc and e46 flywheel works . If it doesn't then it's gonna be e36 ltw flywheel e46 disc e36 pp stock sachs. Both routes u gotta use the e46 tob. Surprised no one knows if the e36 pp will fit the e46 flywheel?????

When you say OEM throw out bearing, do you mean OE, or OEM?

      OE being from BMW directly.

i would say from your description that the problem isn't with the TOB but your pressure plate. Switching the pressure plate will probably fix it but i don't know about mixing e36 and e46 parts.

            Update,

got in there again today, took off the pressure plate and to my surprise, the PP did not adjust at all when I took it off. Which tells me the first time I pushed that clutch in upon the first install, it reset. So the diy did not work, or maybe I'm just not good at reseting the PP. So took off the PP and looked at the clutch disc carefully and saw some outside wear on the edges but otherwise it looked fine.

The e36 pressure plate will not fit the e46 flywheel. the bolts and dowl pins don't line up. (answer to my question so hopefully someone can learn from the tread)

Took off the flywheel and installed my jb light weight flywheel that I had with my 5 speed tranny.

installed the e46 clutch disc and e 36 sachs pp.

id like to make a note that the pilot bearing is in the end of the crank kinda loose. it pops in and out real easy and there looks to be grease in there as well.

put the assembly back together and installed the new oem throw out bearing ( same one I installed on trip #2 in to the bellhousing) and started the car up.

Instantly felt a stiffer clutch pedal and the noise is still there. Hum, push the clutch in and it goes away.

I will say though that the car drives better. gears go in and out of all gears better. 1st and second are a little notchy but fine otherwise and no issues going into anything else.

obviously the ltw flywheel makes tons of noises in the gear box from rattling at the stop light and harmonic s while driving in low rpms in higher gears. Used to that.

            question 1

could I have warped the clutch disc when the install of the self adjusting pp went wrong?

            question 2

could the pilot bearing be making any/all of this noise -- I severely doubt it. but hell I'm getting discouraged

            question 3

could the 25 miles I put on the car with this new TOB screwed it up because of the incorrectly installed PP?

mind the fact that when I press and rotate both the pilot bearing and TOB they feel smooth and fine no notchyness (not a word I know lol)

Thoughts and suggestions (no I will not take a bullet to it haha )

ok to hell with it all.

I am going to look at the oem e46 flywheel tomorrow. if it is in good working order and the duel mass part isn't sloppy as all heck. I m buying a oem saches super clutch kit for the e46 m3.

Includes a new pressure plate, new clutch disc, new sachs TOB, new sachs pilot bearing

that's the most cost effective way to cure the issue

everything will be new. all moving parts will be new and changed so no possibility to have something go wrong. (god I hope not)

only thing I can see being an issue would be the flywheel being warped but it gave me no issues in the e46 m3 I yanked it out of.

I ll report back once its installed

I'm considering a 6 speed swap therefore doing some reading. Did you solve the issue? If so, what is the final setup?

My thoughts after reading thru your posts

                - The pilot bearing does not sound right. It needs to be pressed in place and you nees to make sure the tip of the input shaft is inside it. The forward end of the input shaft will vibrate if it's not engaged, or the pilot bearing is loose. And you could end up with a broken input shaft and/or input shaft bearing. I know first hand - long story. Some what related - the best way I've heard to remove the pilot bearing is using bread. Search YouTube - it's pure genius.

                - Why are you using the E36 release lever plastic pivot and slave cylinder? Is it due to the plane location (relationship of the flywheel surface to the back of the engine block) of the flywheel?

Having the same issue, does't anyone know what the final solution was?
