I'm right at 265 on my built S50 with software, Schrick Cams, a bit of head work, Supersprint headers, AA track pipe and UUC cat back. Also running 24lb Bosch injectors. That stuff combined with an alum single mass flywheel and short 3.64 gears make it a blast to drive!

$75K budget, 175-180ish in somewhat comfort, S85 turbo...?Originally posted by VirtuosoNew question. If I wanna go for a decent early pull, but really steadily fun up to 175-180ish in somewhat comfort. Would I be better off with a built and turboed s85, or a built m70 for luxury highway driving

The S85 is a much more interesting, modern and capable motor. As much as I might like one in my larger E90M3, stuffing one in my little E36 would not be something I would do. Not sure where you would find the room for a turbo (and an S85 should really be twin turbo) unless doing a rear mount and rear mounts come with their own set of problems. For the same reason, I would not put an M70 in an E36.
You can get plenty of low end power and plenty of top end power in a more reliable, easier to service, and less expensive package. I like cars that can be driven and worked on.
With an E36, you cannot fit more than 245-255 rear tires without running flares. Even if you run flares and big tires, there is still a limit to the traction you can get. You will need an aftermarket ECU with aftermarket traction control. If you could make 500 lbs rwtq at 1000 rpm it would be useless and just go up in smoke.

Out of curiosity, where do you intend to do 175MPH? I hope you are considering the necessary downforce for stability at those speeds. I've done over 180 several times in my old Z06. I would never want to do that in a car that wasn't built to turn at that speed or at least had a parachute on the back.

CES has some nice aero parts. They have a car they race in half mile events. With a modest turbo it does 170 in the half. 700 rwhp. They just put a big turbo on it.
