At $19K with one day to go!

Well, that escalated quickly (literally). Went from $15,200 to $19,000 in one bid this morning.

The bid of $19,000 ended up winning the auction.

Surprised someone paid that much, and so quickly. Congrats to the seller, he just got out at the right time.

            Price seemed reasonable to me.

Catching up some deferred maintenance isn't going to cost much.

I wasn't all that far off, although I was wrong when I commented on the cleanliness of the interior when I first saw it. Passenger side looked great, but that drivers side seat was brutal for the milage. Either way, I think even at 19k its well bought.

Interesting to note that a local indy shop owner asked him to bring the car by late last week - he offered to do a visual inspection and put the car up on a lift to take undercarriage photos. Shop owner went on to post a fairly glowing review of the car in the comments.

So, if you believe the indy shop owner was completely unrelated to the seller, then it seems like the car was a pretty solid example. That said, the photos certainly indicated plenty of ticky-tack things to deal with along with a couple of higher cost items. Mostly cosmetic stuff but also a matching set of fresh rubber is definitely in order unless you want to follow in Paul Walker's footsteps (fronts are 13 years old).

For sure not the most fastidious owner - how much is a M3 emblem for the driver's side door trim? Clean the carpets? Replace faded rear badge? Stains in the rear trunk? Dings/dents? It's as if he said, "F-it, I'm not putting a penny or an ounce of effort into it. I want it gone and that's that."

Hagerty has the following values for '99 Coupe.

                  #1 Condition (showroom new) - $40,200

                  #2 Condition (excellent) - $23,600

                  #3 Condition (good) - $17,100

                  #4 Condition (fair) - $11,100

As presented, this car was a solid #3 and that's being a somewhat kind. So the buyer overpaid by about $2k. Maybe the color combo did it for him and he didn't want to wait any longer for another Estoril to come around.

                  PS Here's Hagerty's definition of #3:

#3 vehicles could possess some, but not all of the issues of a #4 vehicle, but they will be balanced by other factors such as a fresh paint job or a new, correct interior where applicable. #3 vehicles drive and run well, but might have some incorrect parts. These vehicles are not used for daily transportation but are ready for a long tour without excuses, and the casual passerby will not find any visual flaws. "Good" is the one word description of a #3 vehicle.

You forgot an important factor: emotion. If someone was looking for a low mileage Estoril coupe then this ticked all the boxes. Maybe they had one previously and wanted another. Maybe they have a perfect black interior from a totaled car and want to do a swap. Estoril over black is and very rare. Who knows.

Someone has a nice car. No goofy mods to reverse, nothing expensive to overcome (apparently).

I didn't forget the emotion. It was just buried in the rest of my blathering on about nothing. Here's the relevant piece:

The Hagerty valuation doesn't get into low mileage and documentation from new. Those are big factors that affect price.

This car could be brought up to #2 level pretty easily. The miles and history would then put it at the top end of #2 pricing.

Yep, it totally could have been brought up to #2 level with a small investment by the Seller. I commented earlier in the thread about this, something to the effect of "drop $1k into this and probably get $2-3k back pretty easily." I guess some sellers just DGAF and want out. There's that 'emotion' thing again.

At $7k it was iffy, anything more than that price and I'd walk away.

As far as my data shows, E36 prices are starting to drop/hold, as the market is about dried up for the time being.

How about "hold/bump?" Every indication that I have seen shows that the prices are at about the highest they have been and climbing. Not climbing astronomically - but climbing.

It is pretty much a consensus that the old $10K rule is probably closer to the $13-15K rule now.

Let's discuss it, other than M3forum's and BAT's, what other sources are you using for your price evaluations?

Sure, we've all agreed here for months now that the "rule" has increased, but unfortunately for the e36 their market of clean examples worth even $10,000 has fallen dramatically as well as the money (enthusiast market) that's capable of buying them.

I'm about to hop on a plane, but I'd be happy to break down my analysis and show my sources for why these cars can't move any higher/aren't worth the slightly inflated prices that we're currently seeing. Should be home Thursday evening and then I can enjoy writing a detailed response.

I still love these cars so I'd hate to come off as attacking your guys platform, it's just the real market data we're now seeing isn't supporting the values increasing, but again more importantly, the market buyers are drying up quicker.

The Estoril here sold for less than anyone I talked with, thought. This was a near perfect example, minimal TLC, mostly clean, and probably the ideal color combo/year for most of us still in love with these cars. It's great someone emotionally bought it for a price they assumed no one else would touch for a sight unseen car, but if anything, this cars sale puts some sense back into the market.

                                Cheers,

                                Chasen
