Cool article, but I don't agree that the E36 M3 was greeted with a lukewarm reaction when it was introduced. Stock vs stock, it blew the doors off the previous M3 in every performance category, was raved about in magazines and by owners, won repeatedly on the racetrack, and was THE car to have in it's price segment. It wasn't until it was discontinued (post 2000) that I started to see grumbling on the internet about how it didn't stack up. It could be argued (and often is lol) that the E36 is not as special as other M cars of the era, but to say the initial reaction to the car was lukewarm doesn't seem correct.
This is a British Magazine. In Britain they shit all over the E36 M3 all the way through its production run. They were all singing from the same song book and looked like they all said the same thing. Total bull shit and pretentious as hell. In North America the critics all loved the car.
