    Steering question

    98 m3 convertible 84k miles

Today I started my m3 for the first time since 11/16. I store it inside for the winter with a trickle charger.

The steering seems to have lost some of its power. Almost like non power steering. It does not return to straight after taking turns. I have to manually turn it back to center.

I checked the ps fluid and it is spot on. I have the front hires inflated to 38psi. The belts seem to be fine.

There are no notable noises when turning.

    Any ideas?

How old is the steering fluid? A fluid flush might help.

Also, check your tie rod ends.

I recently just had this problem. But with my girlfriends 06 330xi.

I applied greese to the u joints on the lower steering shaft ( both ends of the shaft )

Fixed the problem. The cars steering feels great now.

No infamous steering wheel squeak in the cabin anymore either!

      Hope this helps.

I had a similar situation about 5 years ago with a different car. Turns out the PS belt had slipped off (thanks to a shoddy job by shop doing unrelated work) rendering me without any power steering. It felt like I was driving a bobsled through sand.
