    Valve tapping

The valve tapping on my '97 is getting louder. Should I be concerned? What can I do?

You have hydraulic lifters, which should take up slack automatically.

What is loud? You can always replace them.

Do they tick all the time, or just after spirited use (autocross or track)?

If it's only after lots of high-G cornering, then that's entirely normal, and can be somewhat minimized with oil weight but the root cause is low oil pressure under cornering load. This is fixable but expensive, and honestly isn't worth worrying about. The easy Band-Aid fix is to run a half quart over full.

If it taps and ticks all the time, that's bad. Check oil level, then start mechanical diagnosis.

Is it valve tapping or vanos rattling? At some point, stuff in these 20 year old cars wears out. If you are sure it is your lifters, you can replace them in about half a day.

Check your oil level, the valvetrain on these engines is quite sensitive. I always make sure to keep my oil level slightly above full at all times. My car's valvetrain is very quiet now that I do this.

Every time I fill up for gas I check oil level.

Thanks for the replies. The tapping is usually at startup and idle. Increases as the RPM's go up.

What weight oil and what brand are you running. You may want to run slightly heavier oil.

              BMW recommends

              API SN, SM

              ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4

              BMW LL-01

Run some RiSlone in the oil. Will cure that asap.

Thanks. I'll try that. There are 2 different kinds. Which one would you recommend?
