Hi I own a Black 95 M3, its been making a strange wheel of fortune noise eminating from the Vanos area. We think its the chain tensioner on the second short cam chain, does anyone have any ideas or other suggestions?

I have a red 95 M3 in the shop right now for this problem (gravely noise). I will post again in the next few days with the results. I discussed the sound with the shop owner and he felt it was probably the cog that drives the VANOS. It is about $80 parts plus $$$ labor. -
bdodson, can you share your experience with us on the fix soon. I have the same problem been bugging me and would like to fix it also. I heard that it cannot be fix and it's been known 95M3 problem. What did the shop say? Please advice. Thanks.Comment

its the VANOS gears, they develop burs on them and will give a rattle noise at certain rpms
they will not hinder performance or fail, and if the noise bothers you, you can have them replaced, but the noise will come back eventually

its not the chain tensioner, altho that is good guess, and common one.
if the chain tensioner fails, you will know it, it will make quite a racket at all rpmsComment

well...on my 99.. ive almost got some sort of click... and as i increase revs.. it increases its repiticious speed... should i have this checked???.. its not really loud.. but i notice it when im up next to a building.. its definitly comin from underneath the hood...Comment
