    Fan delete modification

can anyone tell me what exactly the FAN DELETE MOD is?? and if it can be done to a '95 M3 and if so would it be worth it powerwise? Also, what about side effects, are there any? I asked at DTMpower but I got a bunch of people who drive 318s and 325s to answer. I want the opinion of my M3 brethren... thanks!

I believe it consists of taking the fan off, putting in a t-stat that opens sooner and changing the switch on the radiator that turns on the auxillary fan on, so that it too comes on sooner. I'd like to know more about this too, I'd like to know if anyone has had any problems with this mod, since I know BMW engines are pretty sensitive to overheating. Are the gains (if any) worth the possibility of overheating?

Hey Roadrunner, did you do this mod? Did you notice any difference? BTW, am I correct in my thinking about the fan switch, the link isn't clear on that.

Guys, do this, it's a worthwhile mod. This mod consists of getting an 80c thermostat, a new fan switch module (goes in the side of the radiator), and actually deleting the fan. The key here is that you are removing "parasitic drag". You are recovering hp that was spent turning that fan. The critical thing here is to replace the switch and the thermo with the appropriate one (80c). your thermostat will open much sooner allowing more coolant to flow through the engine and the remaining a/c fan will come on sooner cooling the engine off. While your at it take this opportunity to flush the coolant, replace the water pump if you have a 95 and add some Redline Watter Wetter (lowers the temp from 5 to 10 deg). i noticed a significant difference on the butt-dyno. i compare this to a pulley mod. it's the same sensation. the car revs up quicker and feels more alive. it also helps eliminate that dead spot btw 4 and 5k. you can get all the parts you need from bavauto.

Would this shorten the life of the engine or put any more stress on the engine?

Nope, think about it - you're removing a burden from the drivetrain which it would normally have to run. By changing your thermo and fan switch you're ensuring that you'll have adequate fail-safes in place provided you live in a hot climate or traffic. The water wetter also helps. My car was fine before the water wetter......now, it's stays a tick before the half-way mark.
