5 speed....no question, unless you dont have 2 arms or 2 legs. but even then you must have a 5 speed

If your referring to the e36 M3's, we're talking roughly about a second difference between the two in 0-60 and 1/4 mile. Not to mention the much more involved driving experience you get with the manual.

I have also heard that BMW automatics are alot more prone to early failure than the manual versions. I read that in an issue of Roundel a while back in which a reader was looking to purchase an e36 M3, and the editor suggested that if he were to go with one equipped with an automatic, it would be a good idea to look into an extended warranty due to the automatic transmission being known to need premature replacement. Not sure if that is just the ones made by GM or not, but it's something to think about. So, yes, manual is way better than automatic.

i kinda consider a sedan a family car in which an auto is more appropriate with kids and all. but definitely nothing wrong w/ a manual 4 door.

First of all an automatic M3.....why?

Second, manual is 1000X more fun!

Third, the thrill of downshifting !

4-door manual........a lot better than manual coupe; why?

Simple! 4-door is cheaper on insurance becuase it is not a "sports coupe" and you don't have to get out of your seat and let the people in the back scratch up the rear of the front seats....

but manual is A LOT faster than auto

Man you guys really know how to make a guy feel like an ass, yes i have an automatic, but still love the car and everyday enjoy driving it. But i do sometimes wish i had the manual, i drove them all my life and just was kinda sick of them when i was shopping for the M3, but if i had to do it again and might someday with a e46 id get the manual for sure! God i feel stupid now Thanks Guys.

manual is just funner and more involved... IMO if you have a sporty car you should have manual because you have more control over gear selection and its just funner than just mashing the pedal or pressing +/- buttons/gates...

Just thought I'd chime in here...being an auto owner My opinion is, and has always been, if you're planning on tracking the car, then a 5-speed is obviously a necessity. For everyday driving, especially in traffic, there is definitely nothing wrong with the auto. It's still fun as hell to drive, and the best feature of our cars is its handling, not it's speed. You're obviously not going to lose any of the beautiful handling with an auto. Yes, you'll get a lot of harrassment from people on the forums (not so much this one, but especially some of the others ), but you'll learn to ignore it. Just my .02!
