    cops frown at 158mph

oh dear god, i so thought i was dead! I was on interstate near dallas & it was 3am no one was around for what seemed for miles, and i just felt a sudden urge to see what everything my '98 m3 could put out. my speedometer read 160, the onboard computer said 158,

Then the lights! oh dear God i thought i was dead i didn't feel like pushing my luck. i pulled over like a good person, i noticed it was one of those undercover SS impalas that are around our area. and the officer demanded i turn the car off and get out w/ my hands up. i did as asked then he spun me around and it was one of my old friends from high school, it was very funny, he let me off w/ a warning and said i was such a "duffe" (aka dork) for pulling over, that the ss impala that he drove top at 145mph and he would never have caught me.

but since then i have kept that little speed limit alarm on, not even turned the asc off for a little fun

it was fun, but never again probably, i love my m3 to much to loose her

ASC.......I think it's automatic stability control

          DSC.......dynamic stability control

ASC - it activates the brakes and will flutter when slippage is detected. It also limits torque and hp by using another throttle body.

The biggest difference between the two is the DSC system takes into account steering angle and also determines whether or not he car is headed in the direction the car believes it should be based on the steering input. Some manufactururs call this yaw control.

The ASC system does is not that advanced. It does not interpret steering input and is designed to prevent the drive wheels from spinning. The system doesn't care (or know) whether it's turning or in a straight line it just wants to get the drive wheels turning at the same rate.

One more thing to add to DSC, it applies brakes to each wheel serperately.

For what it's worth, I have noticed that my ASC doesn't always come on when you think it would. For instance, the other day in the rain I lit both of the rear tires up for an extended period. The ASC never kicked in? Perhaps it was because, as kchildre mentioned, both wheels were spinning at the same rate so the system didn't detect any perceived wheel spin:???:

That was very lucky man, I wouldn't try it again anytime soon. I have taken my M3 up to 155 only after having friends of mine scouting for cops up ahead of me. We did it at about 1am and after the run and I slowed down I saw flashing red and blue lights way off in the distance behind me so we fled off on a side road and went to one of the guys houses that lived nearby. Out here they like to hide on overpasses, but I was flying by way too fast for him/her to enter the freeway and catch up. The nice thing is that I could have pushed the car much faster, but michigan roads are bad and a random pothole could have been the end of some fun.

                      On another note:

After installing my clutch, I started the car while on the jackstands went through 1st and second very carefully. The ASC kicked in right away and my buddy told me it was bacause the front tires weren't moving. I hit the switch and they stopped shuttering. My car has a posi rear end so both rear wheels were spinning in unison. I don't know what the 328is has. Maybe this will help add a little insight.
