    Air bag light on?!?!?

    Hello All,

My '95 M3 is doing a lot of sitting these days (as the WI roads have no snow but 8" of salt on them)...anyway, I did get it out last Sat, and much to my annoyance, the airbag light came on (as it always does when you first start the car)...but it never turned off!

Does anyone have any suggestions of things to check before I have to visit the stealer? I all ready checked the fuse, and I'm not really sure what else to check out.

    Thanks! Battman

At just a guess, I would say one of the seat belt buckle pre-tensioners has set the light. This is very common and if you get the buckle replaced will probably run about $200-$300 to fix. If you don't want to have it fixed they could just clear the fault, it might not come back for a while or it might come back on right away, that is a gamble; likely they'll charge $35-50 just for a fault check and clearing.

This will happen for every M3 out there, more than likely as Moriarty said, the seat belt thing set it off. Don't mind it though, just wait till you have many little problems and send the M in once for the problems. I sent mine in to reset my light. I have not tried this when I had my diagnostic tool but try the tool first. You will need the tool either way so get one fast.

My light came on and I had it checked out by Schneller BMW ( http://www.machschnell.com/schneller.html ) & indicated it was the Air Bag controller itself. Bought a used one on line for $75, replaced it myself, had the fault light cleared and that was that! Would have cost me $$$$$$ to have that done at the $tealer.

You got ripped off, you don't need a new one, just reset it. With the dealer, they will always find the most easiest route, which is the most expensive. Rumor has it that the most common M3's to have this airbag sensor on are the sedans, 97 and 98s....been true so far....it happens after your normal warranty ends, haha; I think it's timed...I have extended warranty so mine was reseted under warranty....

Mine turned on right after the warranty ran out as poop said. The dealer cleared it once for $40, but it came back on about a week later. It has been on now for a couple of months until I can find and extra $300 laying around. The buckle is bad and it is very common. I think the airbag will still go off by default, but with reduced intensity.

the airbag won't deply if the light is on. the light is indicating that it thinks there is a fault in the system, and as a "safety" the system is disarmed until it is reset again.

I never paid the $400 to fix it. Still got robbed when

I had to sell my 98 green m3 cab w/hard top. I would

love to tell how little I had sold it for, Im sure some people

would have a heart attack. I was in trouble w/ the law

                  and had no choice

I was in alot of trouble, facing a 1 to 3 in Rikers Island.

three weeks of that fu#*ed up place was enough to

understand getting into trouble is not worth that.

I was a crazy kid, now im growing up a little, left

all that negative sh#t behind. I was in a big jam

that caused me to sell my 98 m3 for $14000.oo.

Have no choice now but to look at anything good

from that sitch. I would probally not have sold the 98.

Then again I would not have this hunger I have now

wich is the reason I'm getting my new m3 cab in 3

                      weeks. :rockband:
