The front of the head there is a rattle kind of noise that goes away then back as you go through the rpms. Someone told me it might be the vanos that needs replacing? I was thinking its the timing chain maybe i hope not. Does anyone know if the vanos makes this noise when it gets worn or What? Thanks i would really appreciate some help. first i would check your oil level. what oil are you using? if your using xx/30, you might want to change 15/50 or 20/50. vanos or the timing chain tensioner can make similar noise...in which a visit to the dealer is needed. while your at it, check the water pump and the spark plugs to make sure everything is tight. let us know what you find. -
Most likely the vanos unit.
However, like many sounds in a BMW, it could mean one of two things:
1) your vanos unit needs replacing.
or...
2) absolutely nothing is wrong, it's just making a little noise.
No way to tell without having an expert (that you trust!) look at it. Where are you located? Perhaps someone can make a recommendation.Comment

i just had a new water pump installed and thermostat and radiator installed a couple weeks ago. I also just changed the oil to mobil 1 synthetic 15/50. it comes from the very front almost right under the valve cover its not really a knock its more of a mix between grind and knock if that makes anysense. anyway im going to take it in and see thanks for the help guysComment
