    Question on the soundsystem?

I am wondering as i have the stock soundsystem right now - cassette /radio , and the HK system .

If i replace the headunit with an aftermarket one like the alpine 78xx or the nakamichi cd 400(amber)- will it yeild a lot of difference compared to the stock headunit / or cd changer?

i dont want to go to the cd changer route . i like just loading up single cd's up front , and alpine / nakamichi are excellent head units .

    any comments on this matter?

I am wondering the same thing. Everyone I talk to tells me YES it will make a huge difference. I think I am going to order either a Clarion or Alpine HU.

With the HK sound system (which I have also) where is the amp located for the sub? Or is it one amp which runs the whole system? I wanted to give the stock sub a little more "bump". Has anyone just replaced the HK driver with a better one (Orion, Stillwater, or Fosgate, etc...) and then run a seperate amp to it alone? I like the way the stock sub is so well hidden and out of the way, so I do not want to add an aftermarket enclosure, also due to the limited trunk space in my cabrio. Any thoughts on this?

I think there is just one amp and the subs that you are referring to are part of the rear speakers I believe.

Also, I have an Alpine CD player head unit, which sounds very good hooked to the stock (I think) HK system. So I am not sure how much better (is any) sounding than the stock head unit. I built out my last car audio system very nicely, which was my third system to build out myself, and I have to say that the I am impressed with the stock HK system. Well, I am assuming mine is stock other than the head unit. At any rate, my Alpine it does skip quite a bit (much more than my old Pioneer DEH8500 mp3 player in my old car) and has no MP3 capability, so I am thinking about getting this head unit -

          Panasonic MXE CQ-DFX983U (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-9ZvZyVY4wUa/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=3&g=62700&I=133DFX983&o=m&a=0&c c=01&avf=N)

I like the dot matrix display, mp3/wma capability, and aux input features. Very reasonable pirce, the spec numbers look good, and I have heard good things about this head unit via customer reviews. Anyone have one?

I have what looks like an 8" sub in my trunk which fires towards the back of the car. It's in a nice looking enclosure with a black palstic grill which is flush with the back trunk carpeted wall. You can see the back of it when you pull the middle arm rest down in the back seat. Maybe that's a special deal for the convertibles? (because of the lack of fold down back seats perhaps?)

A new head unit makes a huge difference. If you want more bass after that, install a new amp as the factory speakers can't really take too much more power. It just isn't worth it.

A nice 10 inch sub with 150 watt amp will give you a nice full well-rounded sound.

Purple can attest to my car as it just has a new head unit, the rear speakers removed and a 10 inch sub. I think it sounds decent and there is not too much $ invested.

Purple is going all out on his car. Maybe he will be nice and take pics of the entire upgrade to help everyone out?

I am going to completely replace my entire system over the next couple of weeks too. I will try to take pictures and maybe they can be used in a special section or something.

This is what I am going to install:

                    Alpine Head Unit CDA-7995

                    Profile CA440 60Wx4 Amp

                    JBL GTO505c Front Components

                    JBL GTO926 6x9 Rears

Hopefully this will give me a nice clean sound. I might need to add a sub later.

Thanks to everyone that has given me advice so far. I bought all of this from Crutchfield. Let me know if you are planning on buying something from them because I can give you a code the will save you $20 and give me $20.

u really shouldn't need the rear speakers.. i sat in elliots car and it is sick.. no need for rears.. with the sub and HU (and front speakers).. the damn thing sounds killa.. so u saw the sale on those components too did u.. thats what my rents want to get my bro.. but i gotta make sure it will be worth it.. looks to be though

Well I don't need tons of bass at my age so I am hoping the 6x9's will have a really nice sound with some bass but nothing that shakes my neighbors windows. As you know, our exhaust already does that.

Does anyone know what the rating of the sub-amp is on the cabrio's HK system sub component? Is there an amp for the whole system, or are the fronts and rears driven off of the head unit?

They are all driven off of a built in amp somewhere in the rear.
