    check engine (light) help

hey guys. yesterday i purposefully ran low on gas, but i went too far and the car just stopped. now i have the check engine light on (due to this stupid experiment, actually, due to the inaccurate on-board cpu). i know that it does come on whenever you run really low on gas or you just run out of gas. is there any way to reset the check engine light myself (just like resetting the service bar, which i do know how to do)?

    You may have misfire faults.

What did the OBC read? Do not rely on the range function when you're below 1/4. Range function only gives you an estimate and not an approximate range.

Your low fuel light indicates that you have about 2 gallons of fuel in reserve which is estimated about 40 miles or less if driving at a certain speed and load but its all about common sense.

Once your low fuel light turns on, it means get gas now. If the range says you have 30 miles left, in reality it may mean only 10 miles.

Just fill up your gas tank and drive normally. The check engine light may disappear.

actually i did fill my tank and drove around for a while, but no it hasnt gone off. i checked the bently manual and it says that we have to reset it after it does turn on. because i dont have the reset tool to reset the check engine light, is there any way i can default it myself just like defaulting the service bars with pins 7 and 19 blah blah blah? thanks for the help bmwguy...

Grounding the pins wont work and dont think about disconnecting the battery.

        Give it about a week.

my check engine light goes on and off . i dont understand it .

i had the BMW serviced for an oil change and it was reset . after 500 miles it started going on and off .

It comes on more when i check and put the key on spot #3 , and then start .

when i just go fast and turn the key from spot #1 to ignition - sometimes it does not go on .

It is normal for the check engine light to light up when you have it on the #3 position in the ignition switch and everytime you turn the vehicle on.

The DME is doing a self test and normally goes off. Not having a check engine light light up at all when starting the vehicle is not a good sign.

i thought after you put it at# 3 and start - it will come off - mine stays on even after you start the engine .

Ok if it stays on for more than 5 seconds after starting the engine then you have an active fault code.

Only way to get that fault is going to a BMW Center or independant shop or you can buy a fault code reader tool.
