    Bleeding brakes /w ASC

I've read that there is a special procedure for bleeding the brakes on cars with AST. Does that go for ASC as well? I'm using the Bentley shop manual. The brake bleeding section says not to use a pressure bleeder if the car has AST. It says that the brakes should be blead by BMW. There must be a safe way to do this at home. They do not mention ASC, just AST(all season traction). Any input on this?

    Thanks

hmmm.... ASC has nothing to do with the brakes. I only controls the amount of power you can put to the wheels when the car is slipping. ASC is in the differential so that wouldn't not make much sense that AST and ASC are the same (if AST has to do with the brakes). I just bled my brakes using the normal procedure, worked fine

I don't really know that much about how the ASC system works yet. I thought that I read in the owners manual that it would limit power and apply the brakes to control the car in a slide. That's why I though it might have some kind of weird brake system that needed to be blead in a special way.

Sounds like the blind leading the blind...E36's M3's have ASC...it is a module that is attached to the manifold and it also applies braking thru the ABS system. There is no AST system on our car.

Bleeding the brakes has nothing to do with the ASC but I have heard some ABS systems require an extra step (which I honestly don't know). On our cars, you bleed the brakes using the standard method...farthest away from the master cyclinder first... RR, LR, RF, LF.

One tip though, use ATE Super Blue...it comes in both blue and gold colors...that way after hard use or whenever you bleed the brakes, you can be sure you have all new fluid in the system.

why would ASC apply the brakes? How would that make any sense? Your in slide on a slippery surface so it applies the brakes! Sounds like your the blind one T2.

no no no.. the ASC DOESN"T apply the brakes.. it just merely doesn't let the engine rev.. it basically shuts the throttle body until traction is regained and then slowly allows it to open keeping traction.. if u look under ur hood u can see it staring u in the face.. it shouldn't have anything to do with the braking system..

              OK

I will look it up but I thought it applies some braking thru the ABS system to reduce wheelspin and stabilize the traction. I may have that confused with some of the newer systems!!

where is the ASC located on a S52 motor? what does it look like?

Hm. OK. I though it might apply some front brake and or rear brake in a slide to try to keep the car from going around. I never really put much thought into how exactly it would do that or what it would do to correct what. I just turn it off when I want to drive hard. Now I'm currious to see how it actually does work.

Here it is in black and white:

                    http://www.bmwworld.com/technology/asct.htm

                    and

                    http://users.cybercity.dk/~bbo2530/Private/traction.htm

So it's throttle, brakes, and and torque dampening system.

Makes sense, it feels like the rear brakes get applied if you punch it in the snow with ACS on.

Hey Fitchbass, ([email protected], ha ha)

                        Who's Yo daddy?!

The ABS is the brain behind the brakes...ask me how MI-6 killed Princess Di with an ABS program!! (That is WAY off topic!)

Bottomline, no problems caused bt bleeding brakes with our ABS!
