    Audio question... ironic huh?

Yeah, so I was workin on my system today, even though the amp won't arrive in the mail til tomorrow and my car is still in the paint shop for another day or two...

    I have a single 12 inch bandpass box, a 12 inch Alpine type r 1000watt sub, and a Profile 600SX amp.

I made the mistake of never testing the fit of the sub in the box before I did modifications to the box... since it is a bandpass box, I decided to buy two 6" blue neon bars and mount them on the inner walls of the box (not visible at all). And what I had to do was drill a small hole in the side of the box to run the wires out of the box so they are able to be wired to the battery. I am going to seal that hole with silicon tomorrow.

The problem is.... the sub magnet is too large for the fitting in the box.. it needs about 1/8" more clearance to fit. One idea I had was to make a 12" ring out of some kind of material and use that as extra padding to give the sub more clearance. Any ideas as to whether this will work? Any other ideas or input are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yea, you could make a mounting ring out of the same or a similar material to your box.

    Good luck

What about mounting the sub in reverse, so the magnet does not go into the hole? Would it stick to far out the other side?

Also, is there a vent hole in the bottom of the magnet? If so, you will have to give that a little room to breath, so at least plan on a 1" spacer.

Maybe a car stereo shop can make one for you and you can just sand it smooth and paint it black or grey to more closely match the box or sub?

That was my first thought. If that doesn't work, I'd double layer the baffle instead of just using a ring as a spacer. You can never have to much stiffness in your baffle.

I never thought of that, I have no idea why that slipped my mind. Although... isn't there a difference in sound quality when the sub is mounted in reverse? The box has two ports in the top of it behind the sub, so I'm not sure how they would affect sound quality if the magnet was on the sealed side of the box. Also, how would I run the speaker wires through to the back of the box because that is where the terminal is? Thanks

Nevermind, I just checked mounting it in reverse, it doesn't fit that way either. There is a port in the magnet, so I will need more clearance than just enough to mount it. By extending the baffle, what do you mean by that?

Nope. However it will effect the volume of both the sealed and the port (assuming it's a 5th order box), if the box was designed properly the volume of the speaker frame and the magnet should have been calculated in to the enclosure volume. If you flip the speaker the sealed enclosure volume will increase and the ported enclosure volume will decrease. Depending on the percentage difference you may need to change your port length or fill up some of the sealed enclosure volume to get the enclosure back to spec.

Cut a new baffle indentical to the existing one, glue and nail it over top of the existing baffle. That'll space the woofer out by the same thickness as the new baffle, but will also reinforce and stiffen the baffle.

The baffle being the inner wall where the sub is mounted, correct? I'm feeling quite on the dumb side today, haha, sorry.
